We had the good fortune of connecting with Devin Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Devin, do you have a budget? How do you make lifestyle and spending decisions?
I don’t have a specific budget. However, I know where all of my money goes. I have a spreadsheet that outlines all of my monthly expenses and how much goes to each, then another that tracks all of my monthly income. I have 2 concepts that guide a lot of my financial decisions…the idea of having a “rich mindset,” and the idea that “cash is trash.” The first meaning focusing on abundance and availability of money, rather than trying to pinch pennies and save for a rainy day. The latter meaning quite literally that having cash laying around does nothing for me in terms of my long term goals. What I’ve learned over the past several years is that there is so much money to be made out there, and in reality there is INFINITE money to be made out there, the sky is the limit. On the other hand, you can only lower your expenses so much. Every time I increase my monthly expenses, I immediately am trying to figure out how I can spend that money to push myself further in life. I spend more money because I know I can just go make more money.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I own a digital marketing business and focus on social media management for small businesses, though I also do web design, email marketing, branding, and other marketing aspects. It was quite the journey to get here. I graduated college with degrees in Molecular Biology and Psychology. But, didn’t want to pursue a career in either of those areas. I ended up working a handful of jobs right out of school—a few barista jobs, car sales, and eventually got my real estate license. Being a real estate agent was my first real taste of entrepreneurship; I was a solo agent and had to do everything myself, including all of my marketing! Through that experience I learned that I loved having my own business and I really loved all of the marketing aspects that went into running my own business. I also learned that I was good at it. I ended up leaving real estate and eventually starting my marketing business. I began by working with some agents I knew from my time in real estate, then began expanding to small businesses in other industries as well. I’ve now worked with businesses across a ton of industries, for everything from social media and email marketing to logo design and website builds.

I’d say looking back, the actual steps of building the business were easy. But when I was in it, as someone who was not innately business minded growing up, and as someone who had to work massively on mindset throughout the entire process, it was not easy. There were a lot of ups and downs and a TON of learning lessons. What I continued to remind myself of throughout the process of building my business was that there are so many people out there who do this; it’s real, it’s legitimate, and it works. So I just had to keep going, doing the right things, putting the effort in the right places, and it would work out. And it did!

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well, this is a little tough because I’m fairly new to Salt Lake City myself. I’m also not one to eat out! But, some of my favorite places I’ve visited so far that I’d recommend are: downtown Park City, Logan Canyon, Bear Lake, and hiking to Lake Catherine. Then, I’d probably say let’s head down to southern Utah!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
