We had the good fortune of connecting with Jazmia Battle and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Jazmia, why did you decide to pursue a creative path?
I pursued the artistic and creative path because I have always felt like inspiring and healing people through an artistic medium is my destiny. My ancestors, orisha, and the Universe blessed me with so many artistic talents and it is my gift back to them to honor those artistic talents by utilizing them to my highest capacity. The artistic and creative path chose me just as much as I chose it

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I started pursuing a professional career in the Arts after graduating from North Atlanta High school. I am probably most known for dancing for Beyonce on Oprah’s Surprise Spectacular and The Billboard Awards where Beyonce was honored as Woman of The Millennium, Tyler Perry’s For Colored Girls, the musical It’s DanceTime at Disneyland Resort Paris, and being Diva #1 in Big Momma’s House 3 alongside Martin Lawrence. I’ve overcome challenges by having faith in the fact that the person that continues on in the pursuit of their dreams after adversity and failure will eventually reap the blessings of success. This business has taught me to be my own best friend and biggest supporter. What I want people to know about my brand is that I have a blog dedicated to women empowerment that can be found at moodsofaphrodite.blogspot.com I also have an Associates of Arts degree in Journalism from Georgia State University Perimeter College.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would probably take them to a play at Shakespeare Tavern Playhouse or an art show at Peters Street Station. We would go to the strip clubs Magic City and The Blue Flame or to hear some music and have drinks at Kats Cafe in Midtown or get tattoos at the black owned tattoo shop City of Ink. I would also take them for pizza at Fellini’s or Mexican food at On The Border. We would also visit Siva’s Mediterranean for some good food, drinks and hookah! Those are some really fun things in the city that I like to do.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I can honestly say my dance teacher from North Atlanta High School, Nicky Buggs, has been a source of support, encouragement, and love from the moment I met her. My 12th grade Literature teacher Laura Ricca Brazil turned me into the best writer I could be. Last but not least my middle school musical theatre teacher Mahalia Jackson Allen introduced me into my love and talent for theatre which is now a passion I make a living off of.
