We had the good fortune of connecting with Miles Ryan and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Miles, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I never really wanted to start a business. Photography started out as a hobby, and when that turned into a skill and passion, I knew that making a living off of my art and creativity would be my end goal. Starting my photography business was just the first step.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I think what sets me apart from other photographers is my use of deep color saturation within my photos. Being black it’s really hard to find proper representation of us with media and of the little representation we receive, not all of it is suitable in properly depicting us, whether it be culturally, our skin tones or whatvever. I think in my work there is an evident focus on that.

I am most proud about the progress I feel I have made in a short amount of time. Since starting about 4-5 years ago, I’ve been able to work with brands such as Spalding, Lacoste and more. I am most excited about just improving as a creative and as a business person and continuing to share my passion with the world.

Getting to where I am right now hasn’t been easy. I didn’t go to school for anything related to photo or media, but knew I had an eye for it. Learning everything on my own, along with the expenses that come with the niche made it very difficult. A large part of my journey has also taken place while I was a collegiate student-athlete, But its really hard to speak on it because my journey still feels as if it is in its early stages. I am just blessed and happy to wake up and do what I love and I’m excited for whatever is next.

I’ve really learned the value of patience and have bought into the idea of just being present. I feel like those attributes have been a game changer because in this game, it’s really a slow grind and its easy to give up, or feel stagnant. The light at the end of the tunnel is always evident.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
The High Museum
American Deli
JJ’s
Lenox Mall
Mercedes Benz Stadium
Atlantic Station

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would have to shoutout my supportive friends and clients. Those who comment and like my work, are the ones who honestly keep me going. As a creative, there is often a gap between what you think looks good and what you think others will percieve as good, so recieiving the affirmations about my work through like, comments, bookings have been really helpful and give me the confidence to keep going.
