We had the good fortune of connecting with Anthony Jones and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Anthony, what are you inspired by?
I get inspired by other DJs. Kaytranada, Flying Lotus, J Dilla, just to name a few. I would watch YouTube videos of them doing hours long DJ sessions and would get inspired them to do my own. No matter what genre, no matter what tempo.

I get inspired by life as well. Life can be easily stressful nowadays. With homelessness, inflation and everything, life is like one big mess right now. To me, music can be an escape from that and with my mashups, I like to provide different genres, different emotions, etc. It’s to kinda let people know like, “Hey, it’s gonna be okay in the long haul.”

I also weirdly get inspired by myself. I strive to be better than I was last week, last month, last year, etc. Sometimes, I would re-listen to my previous mashups and be like, “oh, I don’t like how this one sounds” and do the same song on a different beat. I am my own constructive criticism at times.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I started doing mashups when I was 14, and I didn’t start broadcasting it to the world and on social media platforms until I was 27. I studied videos on the art of deejaying, practicing both physically and electronically and just been trying to perfect my craft. I would produce for my older brother coming up and I think at around 22, THAT’S when I started taking deejaying seriously. Last year, at the age of 27, that was when I started taking my mashups to YouTube, Tiktok and Instagram.

It’s not easy at all. I have major social anxiety, which is a little contradicting cause I’m also a little bit bubbly. But seeing that I’m interacting with people more and I’m just able to push my content more, means the WORLD to me. My number one thing is to put my craft out there, while also allowing the people to catch a vibe. Sad, happy, angry, whatever have you. All types of music can be blended. You might even catch some classical.

Lessons I learned along the way was to never give up. As cliche as it sounds, it’s true. And don’t be afraid of failure.
I want the world to know that no matter your circumstances, no matter the situation that you’re in, you can do it. And if nobody told you: I believe in you. I also learn that procrastination is gonna mess nobody else up, BUT you. That procrastination challenges me to get my mind together as far as my content, my mashups are concerned.

My story is one for the books. To be a black, autistic DJ who came from a grim background turn all that around into some of the beautiful, vibey and well blended mashups you’ve ever heard is insane and for people like JT from City Girls to even acknowledge my mashup is even more wild.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Oooo, this is a good one.

Honestly, I’m a little bit of a homebody. If I pop out, I pop out.

My favorite places to go to in my city (in Pittsburgh) would have to be either Caliente’s for pizza & Point State Park to picnic or to just chill in public.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My mom’s kids (Raisaunya, Tarelle, Mark & Tyriq).

My friends (Nizee, Deja, Richelle, Monty, Maine, La’shon, and all). Way too many to count.

And my boyfriend Brennan.

Bryan, Cameron, Mylon, Gary, Taylor and Angie
