We had the good fortune of connecting with Akosua Ajabu and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Akosua, we’d love to hear more about your end-goal, professionally.
What’s the end goal? I think this a question that can be so simple and so complex all at the same time. For me, I would express the “end goal” more as end goal lifestyle! A goal is something that you reach and yes it is a mandatory building block for reaching where you want to go, but I think many people think of goals as simple things on the checklist, and once the reach that ultimate end goal, they think there is nothing else to be done. A lifestyle on the other hand is a mindset with actions that open doors for yourself and others at the same time. A lifestyle is a way of life that can have profound impact on a deeper level. Professionally, I would love to be in a place where I have found the perfect way to merge the beauty, education and tech industries in a way that has never been done before. Therefore giving so many people the access to opportunity that they never thought imaginable for themselves.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
I am the owner of Akosua Artistry Salon. From the outside looking in, my salon appears to be pretty traditional in the services that are offered. You know, hair color, haircuts and styles just to name a few. I believe what really set me apart in the industry is that I have really made a point to understand more hair textures than just those that are similar to mine. As a child, I grew up in a family that has a lot of women and girls, and that means a lot of time spent combing, braiding and styling hair. So, by the time I enrolled in cosmetology school I had a lot of experience working with textures that where like mine. I decided that I wanted attend the Aveda Institute where I knew I would be able to gain knowledge that I didn’t have and begin to work with and understand other hair textures. The thought of pulling myself out of the norm and jumping into areas that I was necessarily comfortable with was going to be a Win Win! I believe that experience is part of the reason why my clientele base is so diverse. None of my days in the salon look the same because every single head is completely different, from the coiliest coil to straight as a board and everything in between and I love it. Not only will I give my client a beautiful style I will care for it and teach my client how to care for it also.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Well, my bestie and I could honestly sit in an empty room together and we would cackle and have the most amazing time, like were in Vegas or something! But of course I would be the” hostess with the mostess” and show her around. ( NO, mostess is not a real word, lol) Day One absolutely has to start with brunch, either at Snooze or Sweet Georgia’s Juke Joint! P.S. Sweet Georgia’s has live music!! After eating I imagine that we would set out in the city and rent some scooters. You know, take the opportunity to feel like kids again! No cares with the wind in our hair and a full stomach. The other days we would fill with Spa time. It not a girls trip if the spa is not booked! Jeju or Spa land are hands down the bees knees if bees had knees! Eating Vietnamese Pho is a must do as well. I’m sure that would occur more than once or even twice. We must hit a concert and sing the night away until we are horse, which would happen with or without the concert because we love to sing and harmonize. And lastly, we would totally find an adult dance class to take together and hit the gym!! Sounds like a good time doesn’t it?

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would like to dedicate this shoutout to my Mother, Jane and my sister Nzinga Harrison Md. These women, without a doubt have played a huge role in where I am today and the reason why I am always striving to be my best self. Mom, thank you so much for being my biggest cheerleader, even when you didn’t understand my choices. Thank you for always listening with a compassionate and loving ear and giving me the best advice. Sister, you have been such an amazing role model in so many ways. In motherhood, in business, in your friendships too, I have learned so from you and I know that I always will. Thanks for always having my back! I love you both!
