We had the good fortune of connecting with Bekah Elaine and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Bekah, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
This can be a really loaded question! I feel like they’re plenty of phases in my career where I noticed it’s time for me to stop. Be still and not go forward in the motions I THINK I need to go through to make my dreams come true. I should rather wait and allow God give direction. Easier said than done! There’s a a lot of hustling that goes into making things reality but I’m learning trying to make things happen on your own power vs tapping into Thee Source and hustling with Him gets you much further and you stay in alignment with your calling.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The great space I’ve been lead into at this point in my creative journey is really allowing me to explore my creativity through different genres of music and expression, and finding new ways to tell more parts of my story. A big part of that growth has been due a lot of really dope opportunities to perform and create with so many different kinds of artists in my community! It’s helped me refine myself and my gift, and face new challenges that have forced me to grow in uncomfortable areas to succeed. I want my art to show my growth and the journey to finding whoyou’re meant to be; through all the struggles and lessons and experiences one goes through in that refining process.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I don’t usually get the opportunity to explore the city cause I’m usually hear for music related events, but If I don’t know what’s going and I’m looking for a good time, I go to Time On Sansom St in Center City. There’s live music every night and sometimes they’re mic friendly! That place is definitely like a second home!! If you go there for dinner or to hear some talented musicians, or ever dance all night, tell em Bekah sent ya! Prince Tea house on N 9th St is a darling little shop with a nice assortment of teas and small snacks. And you can never go wrong with going to the Philly Art Museum!! It’s all so beautiful and diverse just like life should be.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I honestly have so many people to thank, because at the end of the day my art is just my expression, but it’s all the people that interact with it and musicians and producers that work with me to make it truly special! I obvi gotta thank God for the gifts he blessed me with, and the parents he gave me to help cultivate them! I didn’t realize it when I was younger, but I do now and I’m loving that their influence shows up in my style. I’ll forever be grateful to my producer , fellow creative and friend turned family, Darius Foster, for pulling me out of my fear and helping me recognize my voice. He believed in and supported me since day one, and made me some BANGERS! I also wanna thank all the poets that encouraged me and gave my stages to try it out like Tribes & Vibes based in Pa and The Rose Garden Experience based in NYC. I felt so included in that space with so many people I looked up to, and grew so much in my lyricism because of their impact.
