We had the good fortune of connecting with m williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi m, why did you pursue a creative career?
i decided to pursue an artistic career because that’s what i was born to do. i could not envision myself doing anything else but artistic work. i have always been a creative person since childhood, trying to get my hands on everything possible. i used to dance, draw, sing, write…you name it anything that gets my brain going excites me!

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
i am a visual storyteller using my platform as a means of activism through visibility and vulnerability within my demographic. i began filmmaking and photography in my second year at Spelman College, and didn’t really know where i wanted to take it. all i wanted to do was get my hands on a camera a shoot anything that came to mind. i started with event photography and documentary storytelling in the Atlanta underground scene where i was welcomed, but quickly began removing myself to develop my own style. being a black, female-presenting person comes with its challenges and prejudices towards both my sex and race, which has caused issues in my artistic processes. men have asked me “do you know what you’re doing?” or said “your camera isn’t really for taking pictures.” which always results in a raised eyebrow and a long sigh from me. in the beginning, these statements really hurt me and made me question whether i should keep creating, but i went through a few years of personal reflection and growth. through those remarks i am forever reminded that i must keep doing what i do. i am currently branching out into the horror genre and working on small short projects pertaining to BIPOC and LGBTQ+ cultural aspects.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
my favorite spots in Atlanta are Tabernacle (for concerts), Bellows Film Lab (for the point-and shoot cameras and film), Rreal Tacos and Pelicana Chicken (for the eats), and Piedmont Park (to clear my head and relax).

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
i would love to shoutout my family, closest friends, mentors, and loyal supporters for believing in me when i didn’t believe in myself and always giving me constructive feedback, so i can better my craft! my love and passion for what i do is rooted in my matriarchal upbringing supported by the belief that i can do anything and everything i dedicate myself to.
