Meet Shafer Caudle | Builder/artist

We had the good fortune of connecting with Shafer Caudle and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Shafer, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
I worked as a carpenter and owned a remodeling company for close to 20 years before I took a shot at my dream career. I always wanted to do more creative projects but it’s just not where I ended up. We did a lot of high end mid century modern remodels, these people would spend thousands of dollars on these incredibly designed light fixtures and faucets/appliances to match the era perfectly but the one thing that always stood out to me was the extra large plastic tv on the wall, incredibly economical but just no heart or design or whatever you wanna call it. It just didn’t make sense to me.
I also knew I wanted to be in a niche industry because I wanted to be the best at something and I knew with my background in design and woodworking and electronics I could potentially have an edge in a very specific niche.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
I think the most distinct difference between the business I want and the traditional business is that I don’t particularly care about making a ton of money. I’d like to make livable wage, would love to retire at some point.
I would love to pay my employees top dollar and have them financially invested in the company.
Would love to find other young people like me (with limited options) to hire and teach, that are intelligent in their own way but may not be traditionally book or school smart. I really hate that so much intelligence is tossed aside because people don’t fit into a particular mold, it’s a really ugly part of our society.
Would love to give back to my community, we have a goal to use 20% of our net profits towards just good things, fixing up an old ladies house that’s unfit to live in, custom tables/cabinets for soup kitchens to give these guys some pride and confidence, arcade machines, for children’s group homes etc.
We have not really made a profit yet but the idea is that we charge a premium to people that can afford our product and are able to do all of the things above with the excess.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I would definitely take them to Buford hwy for an amazing time! It’s only about a mile from our house and it has every type of food you could think of. All super authentic. Great karaoke spots too!

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
There are so many people that contributed, first being my wife, she is a genius with basically every thing business, she started up all of our social media, did all of the photography, she has an incredible eye for design and she’d keep me in check when I was getting impatient or a little too far reaching.
Don McCollister and Daniel Morrison were my 2 longtime friends/employees that joined me on this new venture, they’ve since moved onto other more profitable work but they were crucial in figuring out this new idea.
Danielle Louise is an insanely talented artist/graphic designer that pimped out our website, I’ve been building her a screened in porch in trade for all of the incredible work she’s done.
My parents John and Jane caudle for actually financing a lot of this whole mess and just the incredible support for me to keep moving forward and total lack of judgment.
And my neighbor Adam Eidinger, he came on board about half way into things and legitimized everything, it was a DIY business before he stepped in, made us searchable on the internet, helped us make a brand with a succinct message.
And a ton of other people that has supported via social media posts etc
