Meet Jacky Tenorio | Psychotherapist, LMHC, LPC

We had the good fortune of connecting with Jacky Tenorio and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jacky, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
Now that I’m in my thirties, I’ve realized how important work/life balance actually is, especially being a therapist and working with so many trauma survivors. As a millennial, it’s in our generational culture to value productivity above all else – even over our own basic needs sometimes! It took me about ten years to understand my rest needs and my absolutely max for work hours, but I still struggle sometimes with burnout. Most important thing to do – listen to your body and REST! Whatever that looks like to you 🙂

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I absolutely adore being a Mental Health Therapist. Ever since I was a teenager and experienced my own first therapy session, I knew what my purpose was. I recognize how lucky I am that I was able to feel secure in that purpose so early in life (and I remind myself of that every time I feel burnt out haha). I am a first-generation Cuban-American and when I moved away from Miami, where I grew up, I realized that there was a huge deficit in both the Latinx and first-generation immigrant communities. As a result, I’ve moved toward a specialty of working with clients who are struggling with the cultural challenges a child of immigrants faces when trying to maintain their culture while also adopting a new culture – all while taking on the typical challenges of life, too! Not only is it extremely rewarding, but it also reminds me that I am not alone in my own struggle – and neither is anyone else.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I absolutely love Atlanta! The culture, the people, the music, and the weather are all reasons I chose to both live and work from here. My favorite restaurants to hit up are: Carmel, Barcelona, and BarTaco (gotta love the easy ordering and bomb food). I love walking down the Beltline from Ponce City Market to Inman Park, stopping at Butter + Cream for some sweets, and ending up at the GYM (Guac y Margs) for some tapas and Happy Hour specials haha. Since moving here, I’ve also joined some amateur volleyball teams, scheduled Meetups for runs in Piedmont Park, and of course, you gotta shoot the ‘hootch!
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would LOVE to shoutout my boss, Shakenya Burch-Oliver. Without her support, encouragement, patience, trust, and understanding, I would not have been able to work with my preferred clientele, on my schedule, from home, all while doing my dream job. She is always so very supportive of very-needed mental health breaks, constantly encourages communication and fellowship amongst our team, consistently shows up for her people, all while providing a warm smile, safe space, and positive attitude, no matter what.
