We had the good fortune of connecting with Max Lundin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Max, what habits do you feel play an important role in your life?
When I’m working, I don’t go on my phone. I get myself into a work bubble without any outside distractions. Sometimes it’s really hard to get into that zone and I’ll have to go on airplane mode. But when I enter said bubble, I’m zoned in for hours. It’s my favorite place to be. Awful habit for texting people back, but incredibly helpful to get loads of work done. I also have a habit of seeing every project as a learning experience instead of as something to be exhibited or sold. If something doesn’t come out how I like, I’m not afraid to scrap it all and start again. I just say, “Well, that didn’t work, so now we know.” This mindset is constantly fueling my drive to improve and move forward. I always feel like I’m working towards something better.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I specialize in portrait art, typically using oil paint and charcoal. My style is photorealistic, incorporating elements from historical references and vintage photography, with a contemporary twist.

I often work around that feeling of invincibility you get when you’re a kid. Growing up queer, I was hyper aware of my appearance and behavior. As a result, I was extremely well-behaved, lacking the opportunity for uninhibited self-expression due to fear of consequences. My art often depicts children either reveling in this unrestricted freedom or grappling with feelings of vulnerability. My objective is to authentically capture the essence and energy of my subjects.

As I grow older and I carve out my place in this world, my paintings have become more vibrant and expressive. I moved here from upstate New York nearly two years ago. Leaving my family and friends has been incredibly challenging, but Atlanta is filled with insanely creative people whom I deeply admire, so I’m excited to start building a creative family here.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
As a homebody, I’m accustomed to going to the same spots over and over. First, we’re stopping by Valor Coffee or Pops Coffee Co. I’d have to take them for a walk around the BeltLine and hit Ponce City Market. Maybe get some Thai food. Drop by Voga in Inman Park for some gelato, then walk around to look at all the houses. Gotta pop in on any art openings happening in the area. Then we can go out and try to find some bands playing or go to Crybaby for some karaoke.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank my family, who are incredibly supportive and patient with me as I navigate my path. They’re my best friends, and I’m incredibly lucky to have them in my life. I also want to give a shout out to the staff and my friends from Elmira College who taught me everything I know. Most of my work is based on nostalgia, and I see pieces of them in my work all the time. Finally, big shout out to Gwen Tajz Wine Bar for allowing me to showcase my work in their beautiful space.
