We had the good fortune of connecting with Bree Kelly and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bree, how do you think about risk?
Taking a risk on yourself is the most important aspect of life. Without any risk, there is no reward. With being in the film industry every major decision that I’ve made started from a probability. Specifically when I quit my job in 2019 and decided to become full-time filmmaker. My family and friends didn’t understand, but I knew whether I was successful or if I failed, taking a chance on myself was the risk I was willing to take.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.

What sets me apart from others is my tenacity and drive. When I say I am going to do something I pride myself in accomplishing it. What I’m most excited about is the making of my first feature film Out with the Old, now available on Tubi, Apple TV, and Prime Video. I am proud of this achievement because, despite the adversity of filming during a pandemic I succeeded in getting this film out.

Getting to where I am today professionally was not easy. There were many trials and tribulations where people doubted me or weighed me down. I overcame these challenges by staying true to myself and pushing through hardship. As Nipsey Hussle would say, “The marathon continues.”

The lesson I learned along the way is to always surround yourself with people who will build you up. I also learned to trust the process and try not to overwhelm myself with the future. Simply live in the moment, but also think big.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my best friend came to visit me for the week in Atlanta I would start the week off with something relaxing. Maybe a stroll on the Beltline at Ponce City Market. There, we can try some food at Jia Szechuan or support black clothing at The Village Retail. Adjacent to Ponce we can visit Inman Park and take some photos or hang out at the skate park.

Tuesday we can go to Piedmont Park and go for a jog or do some yoga. After our exercise, we can reenergize with breakfast from Flying Biscuit.

Wednesday is when the week can take off. I would take my friend to Rose and Rye, a nice rooftop bar in Buckhead. Earlier that day we would hit Lenox Mall. Thursday night I would take my friend to Kat’s Cafe for live music and jazzy vibes.

If it’s the first of the month we would go to Frequency Fridays at The High Art Museums and continue the night at The Underground for live music and vendors. If we’re still up to it we would go to Chic, an after-hour spot.

Saturday would be filled with drinks and a good time. We could go to Edgewood and check out a few bars, or go back to Buckhead and visit Teranga Bar or the surrounding bars there. The options are endless!

Sunday we would enjoy Caribbean food and mimosas at Belle & Lily’s Caribbean Brunch House.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I wouldn’t be who I am today without my family and friends specifically my mother who has championed me throughout this journey. I also acknowledged my mentors Monty Ross and Clyde Santana, who taught me the art of film and not just the basics. If it wasn’t for Mr. Santana carefully analyzing my script writing and recommending relatable content, I wouldn’t be the profound writer I grew to be. If it weren’t for Mr. Ross exposing me to the correlation between jazz and film I wouldn’t have an emotional connection with cinema which makes me a better creator.
