We had the good fortune of connecting with Troy Gathers and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Troy, let’s talk legacy – what do you want yours to be?
Ultimately, I want my legacy to be one of a trailblazer. I’m sure not every small detail of my path will be remembered but for the most part, I would love for my work to live on far after I’m gone. From the personal services, businesses and contributions to my social network, I would love for my journey to be remembered as I lived it. As entrepreneurs, we put so much hard work into our pursuit of happiness, it’s only right that it’s acknowledged properly. No one really knows how anyone will be remembered but no one should concern themselves completely with the opinions of others. While here on earth, just be a good person. I don’t think the disciples of Marcus Garvey actually knew who they were standing next to at the time. Overall, I want to be remembered as a good person that came to add value to those I could.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Currently, I’ve self-published and written 9 books under my BE YOU imprint. Most recently, I released a children’s book all about self-worth. The title of the book is; The Story of The King and the Tree Trunk. This book and all others are available on Amazon.com and BarnesandNoble.com for purchase. I’m very proud of this project and the potential positive impact it may have on the youth. I actually have the title of my 10th book and I cant wait to announce it. Hopefully, it can be here with Shoutout Atlanta. All of my books are written to inspire, educate and motivate. Most of my book projects are faith-based in nature or educational. Originally, I wanted to start writing books in undergrad at South Carolina State University but never started. Life can become busy and distracting if you let it. I overcame the bumps in the road by staying positive and found myself falling back in love with writing shortly after. Once you master your own mind, everything else will find its proper place, even distractions. Just keep in mind that we are all here on borrowed time and tomorrow isn’t promised. Conclusively, I want the World to remember my brand and myself as someone that did great things with the time given.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Staying in Atlanta for a week may lead to a permanent stay, but definitely enough time to visit all 4 corners of the city. First, start on the Northside, which is always a great place to grab a bite to eat. I love the Sandy Springs and Dunwoody area and I’m sure any visitor would as well. The Downtown area host the best hotels and views in the city. Some would say its a one-stop shop while in town. Be sure to visit the Georgia Aquarium, The World of Coca-Cola and sporting events while here. The Westside of Atlanta is a great tourist destination and home to tons of Atlanta history and historic sites. The Eastside is also a part of Atlanta with great history and plenty of small businesses to support. A honorable mention is the Decatur YMCA. Be sure to always give back to the youth. Also, the Stonecrest area is a nice destination to shop and explore. The Southside is home to the Airport which means plenty of hotels and bars but also a great destination to support many home-grown businesses. I’ll see you when you get here.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Absolutely, I would to give a huge Shoutout to my late heros; Harriet Ladson and Lavinia Green. My Great-Grandmother & Grandmother. Also, I would love to credit everyone that has supported any of my businesses and book projects. Thank you.
