We had the good fortune of connecting with Kyra Clemons and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kyra, what matters most to you?
The principle that means the most to me, is spirituality. My faith in God has directed my path and my course of action. My spirituality has helped through the light and dark, without giving up. Life is hard…life is long or at least it seems long. There have been times in life, where I have been as bright as a full moon and there have also been times that I wanted to throw in the towel…give up.Through it all my faith in God, the act of prayer, and meditation has helped me to regain consciousness in the midst of chaos (good, bad, or otherwise).

Spirituality has and remains the light of my life. In all the things I go through I always remember to pray, meditate, reflect, give thanks, and continuously be love and light. My spirituality has guided my path ever since a child, as an adult, my faith has become even stronger. I have been able to create a personal relationship with God, which has kept me grounded, my relationship with God has also sustained me through any force of man or nature. All my thanks and praise I give is the Most High…my Mom has this saying…”the church some people will ever see is in you”, I choose to live with the  principles of love, be a good human even when I am faced with opposition, (so that people can feel my love and light that I receive from the God within me). I will always live by this and I will continue to build my business with faith and in faith. With love and much light. I will continue to live in this world, but not be of this world.

Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
My business is near to my heart because my business is a reflection of who I am…love, creativity, integrity, passion, spirituality. “to Sisters in Wisdom” is my business. I am a sister made up of ancestral wisdom and grace. My spiritual intelligence helps to guide my heart, mind, creative flow, and business. I am most proud of taking a leap of faith building upon ideas and creating art that will live on this earth even when my human form has passed.

Through this process, yes problems have arrived financially, I have also questioned myself and the art I have created because people did not understand my vision (I learned to create anyway), also working a full time job while  finding time, space, and motivation to build my own dreams, all the while being mentally and physically tired of trying to build someone else’s dream, that I do not fully believe in. It’s hard BUT it’s worth it…I had to create the mindset that this 9 to 5 is not my peak, it’s a pebble on the way to the highest peaks of my own. I spend my mornings, breaks, evenings after that 9 to 5 grinding for mine, not a pension. I had to release this idea of comfortability, I’ve become comfortable with being uncomfortable. This mindset has helped me to grow as a creative human and business owner.

I’ve also learned that life throws you so many obstacles, you cannot take situations personally because you lose focus on the bigger goal. In building a brand and business, taking breaks are also just as important as grinding. When I take a step back I am able to see and handle situations with more grace and with a larger, more worldly perspective. My story is still being written, I have not peaked yet, but I have made progress and I will continue to celebrate the small wins, because if I don’t, who else will.

Keep watching, take notes, the south will always have something to say…and I’m screaming and packing a mighty prayer at the same damn time.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am Atlanta, but I am  “Old Atlanta”, trying to adapt to this “New Atlanta”. I’m talking about “404”, Mayor Shirley Franklin Atlanta, hitting the “dirty bird”, “Freaknik” in the 90s Atlanta. When I visit the city I am still finding and exploring places/ spaces to visit…oftentimes I feel like a tourist in my own city. Since I have moved to Brooklyn, when I visit the city, my absolute favorite place is home, my childhood home to be exact. The only home I have known outside of my home in Brooklyn. My Mom still lives there. If a friend were to visit me for a week, just know there will be backyard BBQs, yes summer or winter… and you will receive at least one home cooked meal. Personally when I touch down in the city, my first stop is usually the Westside of Atlanta, if you know, you absolutely know, The Original American Deli in The West End Mall…ten pieces hot with lemon pepper sprinkles, fries, ranch dressing, a peach drink with no ice. Yes, you’re probably thinking what separates this particular American Deli from the others, try…then you’ll be able to answer that question for yourself. I usually support local, neighborhood businesses old and new.

I have listed some of my favorite spots to visit…

Food some of my old and new favorites: American Deli in the West End Mall, Dugans Bar on Ponce, Chattahoochee Food Works (Taqueria La Luz, Munster Cravings, Delilah’s Everything Soul), Busy Bee (Soul Food), D and D’s BBQ, Apt4b, Rodney Scott’s BBQ

Creative spots favorites: Wild Women Social Club events, Illuminarium Atlanta, Bear and Honey Candle (Candle Making Class) in Little Five Points

Hangout favorites new and old: Riding my Bike via the Beltline, Ponce City Market, Peaches (Strip Club; if you visit Atlanta you have to at least visit one), MJQs, Friends on Ponce (LGBTQIA+ friendly), Cascade Skating Rink

Self Care favorites: Atlanta Acupuncture ask for Nikita, Heal Thyself Atlanta

My Favorite Place in Atlanta: My Mom’s House…backyard cookouts, place of peace to drown out the noise…only a select few are invited 🙂

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to shout out my family, the wisdom of my elders, especially my Mom. My parents divorced when my sister and I were extremely young, but that did not stop my Mom’s tenacity. We faced struggles and hardships along the way, but through determination, faith, love, and much wisdom, my Mom continues to help my sister and I to become the women we are today. We were taught to always put God first, always be you…even when people are not willing to understand… lead with love. Thanks mom!

My big sister has also shed love, light, and wisdom during my journey. As the younger sibling, I have learned through her triumphs and mistakes. My best friend in wisdom, my thinking partner…my sisters’ and I relationship is one of a kind. We are in sync even when we are apart. Her perspective is unique, refreshing, and most important,  her words come from a place of Spiritual intelligence.

Lastly, I want to shout to the world two books that have changed and also verified my outlook on love and life… “All about love” by Bell Hooks

“Between the World and Me” by Ta-Nehisi Coates if you know…you know. And if you don’t know, add them to your Amazon cart. And thank me later.
