We had the good fortune of connecting with Killa Marti and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Killa, how has your perspective on work-life balance evolved over time?
I have adopted the concept of work-life integration instead of work-life balance. I don’t recall where I heard this but the concept of work-life balance is a bit of a fallacy. We love our lives when we do more of what we love whether it’s at work or outside of work. I prefer that idea because not everyone is energized by “down time” as we have come.to understand it. It becomes more about fitting in the things that you love. Before I had kids, I thought of work-life balance as separating my home life and work life and having plenty of downtime. Now that I am a mom of three boys, ages 7, 2 and 7 months and a business owner, my work-life integration looks a bit different: it’s more about having my time be organized so that I get to fit everything I want to with as little chaos as possible.

What should our readers know about your business?
There are three things that set my business apart:

1) Empathy: as an immigrant myself, I can relate to every single one of my clients. I have been where they are. I know what it’s like to wonder if you’re going to have to quit your job because your work permit has not yet arrived. I have felt that fear of wondering what’s going to happen to your loved one if their asylum is not approved. I feel each of my client’s cases very deeply and it fuels me to do my very best. For this reason, I have also adopted a firm model in which we highlight communication so that my clients feel informed and supported every step of the way.

2) My strong work ethic: I love immigration law. I knew I wanted to practice immigration law from the very beginning and I have never wavered. I enjoy the work that goes into it. I like dissecting complicated cases and reviewing the law to develop strong arguments that produce positive results for my clients. I prioritize working diligently and in a timely manner. There’s nothing more important to me than my clients being able to trust my word.

3) My faith: a good friend once told me “Work hard as if it depended on you, knowing it does not.” The work that I do has high stakes, and there are times when I feel the weight of the world on my shoulders. My faith in Christ reminds me that I put in the work, but He is always in control. There are times in which, with His favor, I have been able to produce results that defy reason. In those moments, I am humbled that He used me to bless somebody. And when things don’t go as planned, I know that He always has a plan for my clients’ lives far beyond what I can imagine. This allows me the freedom to put in the work but also have peace that I am just a part of my clients’ story, not the whole of it.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I would start by taking them on a hike to Kennesaw Mountain National Battlefield Park and its surrounding trails. Afterwards, we would go get brunch at Douceur de France. I love their coffee, croissants, and omelets. I’d also spend a couple of days at the Atlanta Aquarium and the Civil Rights Museum Downtown. Atlanta has a great entertainment and music scene. If at all possible, I’d love to catch a show at the Laughing Skull, the Masquerade, the Roxy, or the Loft. Getting Yong Tofu Curry Soup at Food Terminal on Buford Highway is an absolute must. They also serve the best Tiramisu (you would never guess). Their entire menu is amazing. I’d also make sure to fit in a day visiting the vineyards in Dahlonega and hiking some more at Toccoa Falls. Dinner at Rumi’s Kitchen is such a treat as well. We’d have to make time to catch a ball game at the Braves Stadium and make time to get some pizza at Antico’s. They have the best-tasting crust. You can tell I love to eat! My kids also love the Atlanta Botanical Gardens and the Fernbank. Can’t miss those either.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have been exceedingly blessed to be surrounded by luminous, loving, creative, successful individuals and they’ve all been pivotal to get me where I am: – My parents who have supported me in everything and who made immense sacrifice to help finance my career in the U.S.
– My husband who is my biggest fan and supporter. I can talk to him about anything and he always gives the best advice!
– My best friend from college, Tina Nguyen who is such an angel. She’s been through the toughest things and is someone who radiates joy. I can trust her with anything.
– And all my friends who support my career and my business.
