We had the good fortune of connecting with Regina Vera Castellanos and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Regina, what led you to pursuing a creative path professionally?
I have always been drawn to artistic things. Dancing, Reading, Drawing, you name it. I distinctly remember I loved watching animated shows and movies -as most kids do- and I suppose I just never outgrew that part of me. When I discovered that you could major in and have a career in animation it was game over for me. I was doing every bit of research and planning I could to make sure going to art school as an animation major happened. I’m really thankful that attending the SCAD Atlanta campus solidified that this is where my passions lie and I picked the right career path.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
For me, the journey is just starting out and I can’t wait to see where it goes. During my time as a student I was involved both as an animator and project manager on several different animated short films that allowed me to grow my skills as an artist and leader with teams of up to 70 and 90 people. The challenges to make each project come to life are probably too many to name, but with resolve and hard work we made it through. I’m very excited to share all that hard work and dedication with the world as they get ready to be shared at film festivals. I have to say though, as a recent graduate, I am most excited to see myself develop as a professional! I am so very grateful that I am getting the opportunity to be a production intern with DreamWorks Animation as my first venture into the animation industry. 23-year-old me can barely believe it, and I’m sure if I could talk to the me of 4 years ago that was nervous and excited to start studying animation she would be pinching herself to make sure it was real, I’m more than excited to see what the experience will bring.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If they were visiting around winter definitely a trip up to Helen for a fun outing and some awesome German food and Beer at the Hofbrauhaus Restaurant. For things within the city itself, definitely have to make a stop at the High Museum, their different visiting exhibits are always loads of fun but I also quite love their permanent collection. The Atlanta Botanical Garden, and piedmont park for another fun hangout. Food wise, I’d take them to Hajime Ramen & Sake – they have my favorite Ramen in the city by far- and to Wing Factory around East Chastain Park for Honey BBQ Wings and Chili Cheese Tots!

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
My family, my successes and accomplishments so far are all thanks to their unwavering support and encouragement from day one. Without them I wouldn’t be the woman or artist that I am today. Also, I owe so much to the Savannah College of Art and Design. For introducing me to my professors, whose advice and feedback has allowed me to grow and helped me to be one step closer to achieving my goals. And, last but not least, for also giving me the incredible group of artists that have become not only peers, but also creative collaborators and the best of friends. I feel so lucky to have such a fantastic community cheering me on, and encouraging me to succeed.
