We had the good fortune of connecting with Auntie Naj and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Auntie Naj, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I would have to say authenticity, I only know how to be myself and draw inspiration from my life. I feel like in the social media age it’s easy to adapt other people’s thought process. I think it’s important to take a break from social media and watch a movie you’ve always loved or listen to a song from your childhood. Doing this allows me to reconnect with my inner child, and remind myself who I am and what’s my personal mission.
Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
My art is music, which is usually a reflection of how I’m feeling and who I am. Sometimes I want to flex and other times I want to vent. What separates me from others is I draw from my own experiences and own interests, I might get inspiration from Gucci Mane, Phyllis Hyman, and Hov in the same day. I might watch a 30 for 30 and Sex And the City and mix it together and write a song. I am excited about the new music I’m about to drop and going to the next level. I got to where I am today by being myself and maintaining an imagination. Working for my big break in music is an everyday challenge, sometimes I question myself but I know it will happen for me soon. That’s my motto Top Soon, keep putting in that work and you will get there. My love for music is mad deep so that keeps me going. I Don’t want be that old woman who is bitter because she didn’t chase her dream. I’ve learned and am still learning not to take myself so serious. Find a balance of being intentional but open to the process. I want the world to know that I got a lot of heart and no matter what is thrown at me I will come out on top and remain myself.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Gotta shoutout my blood brothers Amir and Rad they keep me creative. When I see or hear what they create it reminds me of who I am and centers me. My brother Rad was the one who said to me record the music yourself, and it’s been history since. I gotta shoutout Diddy anytime I hear his voice it motivates me not to quit and to go harder.
