We had the good fortune of connecting with Bridgette Martin and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Bridgette, how do you think about risk?
I don’t necessarily consider myself a risk taker, however, I have taken some to further myself in live entertainment. I’d say the biggest risk I took was stepping down from a full-time position at my secular job to pursue a career in comedy. I was making the most money I had ever in my life and walked away to go on the road. It did make it easier for me to start letting go of things that weren’t serving me or the path I wanted to take.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
I didn’t start performing until about 8 years ago. At the time, I was recently divorced and my ex-husband was a comic. I would try to help him write and he didn’t like my jokes. After he left, I got on stage for the first time to give it a try. And I was hooked. And funnier than him.

It wasn’t easy getting started. Because I’m a woman, and, unfortunately, that is still a thing. Additionally, I work blue, which, for a woman, makes it even harder. Especially if you want to work in clubs.

It has been taxing on every romantic relationship I’ve had. Either being on the road, or talking about my relationship on stage. You’d think people would be flattered to be your muse, right? Wrong!

Then, in 2021, I was diagnosed with liver disease after a two-week hospital stay. And it wrecked my world.

The hardest thing about all of this is that there was always someone telling me “No.” Whether it be that I couldn’t do something, or I wasn’t a good fit for something, or even be allowed to do something. While it sucks to be told “No,” it makes it hell of a lot easier to find a path that works for you. In order to know how to move forward, you need to know which path to leave alone, even if it’s just for the time being.

A majority of my life has now been spent in this industry and it has made me strong. Willing to stand up for myself, and, sometimes, others. It’s given me a personality, on and off-stage, that can and will serve me in various areas of my life.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I live in Chattanooga metro. Some of my favorite spots to hit are downtown. There’s a lot of live entertainment here, and it’s happening every night of the week.

My go-to place for food and drinks is Big Chill – they have a line of frozen alcoholic beverages that slap.

There is also a lot to do outside here, whether it be the Walking Bridge, or Lookout Mountain. I won’t take people to hike because I’m lazy, but there is plenty of it I can direct people to.

There are also plenty of farmer markets and art markets happening in the area. I’m a big proponent of supporting local and will do so whenever I can.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have been in the live entertainment industry for almost 20 years and have been beyond blessed with help and mentorship from so many people.

My career started in Tampa, FL at a comedy club, Side Splitters Comedy Club. The owner of that club taught me so much about the business of comedy. Through that job, I met so many people and learned so many things. I was with that company for 14 years and wouldn’t be doing what I am now without the skills I picked up during my time there.

I also cannot have gotten this far without the work and support of every performer and producer I have worked with during this time. Especially those that encouraged me to keep going when I didn’t want to. And there are so many of those people. I’d hate to leave anyone out, but, I would hope they know who they are.
