We had the good fortune of connecting with Moesha Tafari and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Moesha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I always love looking different, people would always walk up to me and ask “who are you wearing” I would say “me” and it felt good. I thought about how women would complain about getting clothes to fit the right, I thought about how many women I would notice wearing ill fitting clothing or styles not suited for their body type.
So since so many wanted most of my clothing, I decided that I may be on to something here. Maybe, just maybe I could help some feel beautiful and confident about their dress code. Sure enough, I was able to turn my passion into a business.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
For many years I dressed so many women. Taking a plain piece of fabric and creating a beautiful piece of clothing is nothing but art.
Two main areas that has always set me apart from others is, the fit, and delivering on time.
I am most proud of my skills, they are all self taught. You see, I am from the island Trinidad & Tobago and I always dreamed of coming to the USA to study fashion design. At age 17, I saw an ad in the newspaper that a lady from Florida was on our island seeking ones who wanted to major in fashion. I responded to the ad and got an appointment to see her. This was like a dream coming through. She took my information and said when she got back to Florida she would send me an enrollment package, but I had to pay a registration fee of $700.00 TT Dollar to be considered.
I rushed home all excited to tell my dad and asked him to pay the fee. He did much to my delight, however when she mailed me the package, I took it to my dad, he read it then said I can’t go because it was to expensive, I begged him and swore I would pay him back but he didnt budge.
I called the college and spoke to the lady and explained what happened. She said the will hold the fee for 3 years and if I was still unable to come they would refund the entire amount. I never got to go, and the did refund me the fee.
So after that, I swore to myself I would teach myself what I needed to know. I also made it a point to get jobs with different designers just so I could learn the inside scoop.
My journey was not an easy one, but I was determined, plus I have gifted skills that helped me greatly along the way.
I overcame my challenges by staying focused on my goals.
Along the way I have learned a lot, but most important is to know what you want, work hard and don’t let anything or anyone get in your way.
I want the world to know that i’m an island girl that takes pride and pleasure in making any woman feel beautiful, look great and loving the skin they’re in.
That goes for some men also, besides designing and sewing clothes, I design and sew headwear fir men and women with most of my clients being male.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Hmmm, I lived in New York and New Jersey for 16 years combined. Im new in Atlanta and still learning the place, I will take my friend these places if I can find them, to museums, Art shows, depending on the season, we will go to the beach, the botanical gardens. I dont eat out, but I will take them to restaurants where they prepare the food right in front of you , some days I will cook for them. Will take them to a wine country tour, On my list to do, so I will take her to that 90 minute sight seeing trolley tour and whatever else I can cone up with.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
My mom, she always boasted about me and my skills to everyone, and got me lots clients also. Her was Pearline Dyer. And my daughter, she has and still is my inspiration in everything I do. She always encourages me to persue my dreams. I love her dearly. My mom is gone now, so this shoutout is dedicated to my only daughter. Her name is Attiya Dyer. I also wanted to shoutout my husband if its not to late. He is my model for my male headwear line, always willing to help. His name is Ras-Talawa Tafari
