We had the good fortune of connecting with Cory Salatino and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Cory, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
One of the most significant risks I took was going to boarding school 5 hours away from home for high school. It turned out to be the best decision I had ever made. Canterbury Prep helped to mold the man I am today. As the saying goes, “No risk, no reward.” But let me clarify my breakdown of this saying, rather than taking risks on a whim, I take calculated risks. Meaning I weigh all options before making a decision. Sometimes I go with my gut. I have good intuition, but there are no certainties as an entrepreneur! Once you accept the idea of constant growth and willingness to learn from others who are more experienced in life and business, your mindset changes. Everyone has to start somewhere, right? Even if you fail, there is much to learn from those failures that will only benefit you.
From my personal failures, I have learned what I can do differently to make sure that I succeed in the future. Another saying that I follow is, “you will never know if you don’t try.” How will you ever know that your business will be successful if you don’t try? How will you ever know that you will be the best at something if you don’t give it your all? Taking risks is scary, yes. But they can lead to amazing things. Within this year, I opened a second business, and this past month I started the process of opening a new branch of the Incognito Consulting brand: Incognito Design Studio. I brought on a new business partner (risk) who is so talented in construction management with an attention to detail. Together, we have always created a strong foundation for this branch (reward).
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Incognito Consulting wanted to focus on the fact that as consultants, we ‘R’ incognito, meaning that a brand or business shines without its spotlight being taken away by those that work behind the scenes. Our goal is not to bring attention to us but to bring a business to its fullest potential in ways they never could imagine! When starting this business, I kept in mind that I did not want to make a company feel as if they were a carbon copy of its competition or sell a service that a business does not need. Time after time, many will hear the phrase “quality over quantity,” but it can be seen that some companies lose sight of an overused quote as such. That’s why, as I started and grew this business, I’ve always kept the idea of standing out to be the main focal point and mantra for all the goals I set. With this, I’ve seen that working hard on this business to produce quality work has grown it to what I deem a success so far. As entrepreneurs, we know the blood, sweat, and tears poured into a business, but companies must be unique because each business owner is unique.Being a business owner is never easy. While everything in life has its challenges… I will say this, when you fall, get back up. There is much to learn from your failures that will only benefit you in the long run. Trust your instincts. Take the risk. Open that business. By the end of my career, I want to look back and say to myself that I made an impact and helped people achieve their dreams along the way. I helped curate a brand that will sustain a family for generations. I helped design a brand that was timeless and classic. I helped bring a company from the depths of despair, and they found a way out and are back to thriving. That is what I hope I will have brought to the world when my career comes to an end.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Honestly, I curate my visits based on the person. The consistent tread seems to be a Friday night at the Battery. Grab pizza and gelato at Antico Pizza, followed by drinks at Live! (maybe ride the mechanical bull at PBR.) There is a Fat Tuesdays you can grab an adult beverage to walk around with. There is even an amazing Cigar bar! We then spend the day Saturday along the BeltLine eating, drinking, and shopping at Ponce City Market. I love to take friends to tour the Botanical Gardens. Finish up Saturday evening with dinner at Barcelona, Kyma, or South City Kitchen and finish the night off at Johnnys Hideaway in Buckhead for a night of fin!. Sunday’s we try and catch a game at Mercedes-Benz Stadium! If kids are involved I always take them to the Georgia Aquarium!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I was fortunate enough to have been surrounded by influential and inspiring people throughout all phases of my life! I would like to dedicate a shout out to my partner Daniel Richardson who has helped to shape and groom Incognito Consulting with me. Crafting a vision we couldn’t be more proud of! He has had such positive impacts on both my personal and professional growth! Im honored to have a such a dedicated, loyal, and inspiring person in my life.
