We had the good fortune of connecting with Ohavia “Oh” Phillips and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Ohavia “Oh”, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting The Oh Show LLC was inspired by my roots in local TV news. I wanted to be more enveloped in community stories and dive into the heartbeat of communities. I wanted to support them more, hear them out and offer solutions. I could not do that in news. In news, you are only responsible for getting the facts and bringing it back, but that was not enough for me. I wanted more. So I quit on October, 8, 2019, launched my talk show April 2019 and became an LLC through a blessing on May 2019. Th rest is hardworking and history. I also wanted to see more representation in media beyond skin tones but accents, experiences, backgrounds, beliefs. I wanted to see the spectrum of beautiful people through lived experiences. So I took a leap! So glad I did.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
What sets this brand apart from others is simple, I don’t compare. The journey I am on is a CALLING. NOT for clout or to be capitalistic, but to be consumed by communities for positive impact through positive and intentional multi-media content. I bring an energy from out of this world, love from the heart, and I show up authentically ME. No one is me, and I am focused on my assignment. As for The Oh Show. It is a talk show FOR the community and BY the community. The Oh Show, through feedback from the community, creates all of the live shows in themes. The themes are inspired by the community and also inspire viewers to feel inspired, seen and heard! At The Oh Show LLC, we believe that when you’re given a platform, it should be used with purpose to engage communities, inspire conversations and equip viewers with knowledge needed to inspire action. This is not your average talk show. Viewers will get MAJOR energy, #Ohmazing positivity, a powerful panel and intentional giveaways to inspire viewers to PULL UP in what they love and SERVE the community. However this was NOT easy. Building anything from the ground up isn’t easy, but it has been worth it. I have learned so much about myself, the business and have developed strategies to stay consistent and true to who I am. I learned to trust my heart and lead with love in my communities to create content that is empowering and equipping. I want the world to know that media is my life, it is my heartbeat. Any content I present to the world is to inspire them and remind them of how #Ohmazing they are. It’s not about clout or popularity but purpose and positivity.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Aye! Okay, so boom. I LOVE art. I would take a visitor to our local museums here in Charlotte to talk about exhibits and pieces and inspire new ideas. For me those places are The Harvey B. Gantt Center and Elder Gallery of Contemporary Art. Then, we will get food at STIR Charlotte or Vana Southend for the vibes. Then we will walk uptown where I ALWAYS see people I love (which is everybody lol) hug them (ehhh COVID) talk and catch-up. Then I’d need the night with any place playing afro-beat!!! I love to dance!!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shoutout to my roots in local news. I would like to shoutout Spectrum News CLT. It taught me the best lessons and ultimately inspired me to chase this media calling of mine. I learned how to produce excellent stories, report on the facts, develop the stamina for quick turn-arounds, hear my community out and SHOW UP authentically. News has EVERYTHING to do with who Ohavia is. I will never disrespect that. Though, THAT TYPE of media was NOT for me, it showed me the way. I am forever grateful for my local TV news roots. Shoutout to all of my local TV family and mentors and guidance ambassadors.
