We had the good fortune of connecting with April Brown and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi April, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
So, it was about 13 years old ago when I made the decision that one day, I would have my own clothing boutique. At that time, I was living in a city where plus size clothes were in huge demand and not many stores carried women plus size clothes that were flattering. My thought process was, I wanted to be that person that would be able to supply stylish clothes to help curvy women to look and feel good and confident about themselves. Fast forward to 2020, like most entrepreneurs such as myself that decided to take advantage of the pandemic, I was finally able to launch Stylush Boutique selling only plus size clothes during the start of my business.

What should our readers know about your business?
Stylush Boutique is all about creating a destination where women can look and feel their best effortlessly. Our brand offers bomb basics, casual chic pieces, and neutral tones which is essential to every wardrobe. We really pride ourselves on making sure that our collections are cohesive, comfortable yet stylish, timeless, and versatile making it easy to transition from season to season.

When I first launched Stylush Boutique, we were exclusively a plus size brand. Not being plus size myself, I found it very challenging to connect with that audience. So I made a tough decision to take a step back from only offering plus size clothing. Not only that, the aesthetic of Stylush Boutique changed as well after relaunching in the Fall of 2021. Any time a business changes up the type of things they sell, this can often change up the audience. For us, this has been one of the biggest challenges. We are continuing to work hard on creating content that we know will resonate with our new target audience.

Looking back, these past two years have taught us how important it is to invest in your business. People are more willing to invest in you when they see that you are investing in you. Each year, we are going to set the bar for ourselves by continuing to grow and setting new goals for us to reach.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
So I am located in Tallahassee, Florida and we are getting better at providing more grown and sexy spots for my ladies who are in their 30’s like myself. I have to be honest, I’ve fallen off from exploring the city so I would actually be a horrible tour guide. lol But I will say this, for an amazing view of the city at night, we would definitely step out to Level 8 for some roof top drinks. There’s also Charlie Park which is a new rooftop cocktail bar that over looks Cascade Park which is absolutely beautiful! For some laid back fun, District 850 is a great spot for bowling, arcade games for adults, the escape room, and so much more. For us, this would be considered our David & Busters. One thing Tallahassee is going to offer is restaurants. We have so many different restaurants and a lot of hidden gems that we can explore.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My entire undergraduate years of college was a creative experience for me. I started working in retail stores as the stylist where my role allowed me to be responsible for the layout of the store. I was involved in numerous of modeling shows such as the Bronner’s Brother Hair show where I modeled for Milky Way. Shoutout to Ericka Turner who introduced me to the whole process of becoming a model for the Milky Way stage. That opportunity became my first paid gig as a model. Finally, my sister-in-law pretty much made me her personal stylist when it came to her photoshoots. I truly enjoyed it because I loved the challenge of being able to find plus size clothes that she actually loved. Reflecting on this, made me realize how much of an impact of going through a journey can have on your decisions.
