We had the good fortune of connecting with Jocelyn Elmore and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Jocelyn, how did you come up with the idea for your business?
Baked by Jocelyn came into fruition while I was studying abroad in Spain. We were given a task in my business class to create a simple business pitch and plan. One day whilst abroad, an idea to combine my two passions/businesses into one popped into my head. Previously, I used two names for my businesses: Sweet Treats by Jocelyn and Face Beats by Jocelyn. I combined the two using the concept of “baking” with setting powder during the makeup process and of course baking pastries. My logo contains a cupcake in the middle with a hand holding a makeup brush above the cupcake. However, instead of powder, the brush is sprinkling sprinkles. Eventually, I would like to create a line of makeup products inspired by my pastries.
What should our readers know about your business?
Baked by Jocelyn is unique because we offer both a service and a product. Who wouldn’t want a warm cookie before or after a makeup appointment? Additionally, I operate my business out of my passion and love for cooking. Although finances are indeed an important factor to my success, impacting as many people with the gift God has given me is just as important to me. Entrepreneurship isn’t for everyone. It requires a great deal of sacrifice, time, failure, etc. You must have the determination and drive to push through your lowest moments to eventually make it. I believe that I’ve always possessed the entrepreneurial spirit. I am a go-getter who doesn’t stop nor gives up. I am where I am today because I just kept going. There is always room for improvement and growth and everyday is another opportunity to do that. It hasn’t been easy at all. There are times when we have 0 orders or appointments for weeks or months. However, you must continue to focus on the end goal and keep pushing on. Your business succeeds if you are willing to do the work to make it succeed. I just recently relocated from Maryland to Texas. If anyone in the DFW area is reading this, check me out! Also, my sister and I just started a Podcast, Lets Talk About Men Baby. Check us out on Instagram, @lets.talkabout.men.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I must give credit to someone who has been one of the most influential people in not only my business, but in my entire life. Some call her Debbie, but I call her Grams. I started baking desserts around five years old with my grandmother Deborah. I enjoyed learning from my grandmother and soon became Debbie’s “little helper” or “little Debbie.” We would spend many weekends trying new desserts such as 9 thin layered cakes, also known as “Smith Island Cakes.” Our time together not only taught me the skills needed to create delicious pastries, but also life skills such as patience, money and time management, customer service, and gratitude and love for my gifts.
