We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenneth Lovell and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kenneth, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
The day I decided to go out on my own was one of the greatest days of my life. I’ve always had a bit of an entrepreneurial spirit, and I had success working with another company doing the same type of work, so it was a natural fit for me to open my own music and sound design company.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
As Blue Green Submarine, I wear many different hats. Some days I’m a composer, some days I’m a sound designer, other days a producer, but most of the time, I wear them all. I enjoy all aspects of what I do, but I’m most interested in the creative spark that comes when you collaborate with another artist on their project. When I’m at my best, I’m a creative accomplice, an enabler. I’m most proud of the group of talented people surrounding me. They include everything from film makers to beat makers, painters to photographers, musicians to scientists. This circle of friends constantly inspires me to be my best. Challenges will always come, so it is important to focus on your goals and push through. If you are doing what you want to do, and you are your own boss, you are already successful. Most people fall into a job or career without thinking about what they actually want to do. I’ve made the choice to pursue a career in something that I am passionate about. Once you make that decision, there is no turning back. You have to follow through, and work hard ever day. The old adage is true, if it were easy everyone would do it.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta is such a great city! Food wise, you can’t go wrong with all of the different flavors and culture in the Buford Highway area. For tacos, I’d recommend Taco Veloz, for Vietnamese, I’d recommend Lee’s Bakery. Moving North, Circle Sushi in Roswell is my favorite. It’s a low key Japanese owned and run traditional sushi bar. Of course, there are so many other places in and around Ponce City Market as well. You can’t go wrong! I’d also recommend taking a walk on the Atlanta Beltline and visiting the Grant Park area, both are full of good food and good people.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I have to give a a shout out to everyone who has trusted me to help them realize their creative goals. I’m always humbled to be asked to collaborate with other artists. Sound is an open door to all kinds of expression. Music, Film, Animation, Motion Graphics, etc are all accentuated by sound, and by collaborating with other artists and designers, I’m able to get a glimpse of their creative process. I learn so much from them. It’s amazing.
