We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. Keisha and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dr. Keisha, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
I built my business for me. It didn’t start out as a business in terms of a service I wanted to provide, but more of a community I wanted to build. I wanted to build the type of community that I would want to belong to, because it didn’t exist. I found myself at a place in life and my career where I wanted to be surrounded by other women who are “figuring it out”, who have. level of expertise and faith, but who also strive towards reaching their goals. Building the community came first. But the community needs to be sustained, and that’s where the business comes in. It gives me a structure to support the community and its growth.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
What sets me apart from others is that I don’t fit into any particular box. I was trained to be a psychologist, I am an academic which means I spend most of my time teaching and writing among other things. I am a creative, and I’ve really tapped into that part of me over the past 4 years to create some amazing content while building my platform. This is not easy. Sometime folks don’t know what to do with me in the spaces I inhabit. Each aspect of me compliments the other, but it can make me stand out at times. That’s a bit risky because sometimes me standing out is what gets the job done, what gets me notices, what makes me a good leader. But me standing out can also make me a target in some extreme cases and oftentimes misunderstood in others. What I’ve learned along the way is that regardless of how difficult the process may be, it is always worth it. For 2 reasons. 1. The end results/product of my work always impacts people in a positive way. It’s more than inspiration, it pushes them beyond that into action, and that action can change their lives. 2. I have some people who support me and rock with me so hard, they genuinely believe in me more than I believe in myself a lot of times. And that is priceless.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I live in New York City. I love showing off my neighborhood. But I’m not sure this applies to your audience. There are lots of authentic Italian restaurants here. I also love the Highline and Governor’s Island. Just about any type of food you would want to try is in my city. But a visit to NY is not complete without pizza. So we definitely would get some traditional NY pizza from Rocky’s in Brooklyn, and then also hit up one of the brick oven spots. In the summer there is live music at various parks, so we would check that out too.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Shoutout to all of the women who went before me, are coming behind me, walking beside me and especially to those who are lifting me up.
