We had the good fortune of connecting with Mikayla Taylor and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mikayla, can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
The thought process behind starting my business is a drive to live life on my own terms. As someone who deals with physical and emotional symptoms of anxiety, I felt my life wasn’t in alignment with trying to keep up with corporate culture, and my health suffered. Although starting and growing a business is certainly stressful, I feel at peace knowing I am building something that allows the flexibility and freedom to prioritize my health and family. One of the main reasons I decided to start my business was so that I could create a work-life balance that works for me instead of against me. And so far, it’s been one of the best decisions I’ve ever made!
I fell in love with writing at a young age – it was my childhood dream to be a journalist! When I decided to start a business – writing for others, telling stories about other women entrepreneurs – was a no brainer! I’m grateful that my copywriting business allows me to take on clients and projects that I’m passionate about and be creative at work.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
As a business owner, I’m most proud of building something from nothing. I think many entrepreneurs can relate to that. What started as an idea and a dream has turned into a growing, thriving business.
When I started my copywriting business three years ago, to be honest, I had no idea what I was doing. I took on any project that came my way, regardless of whether it was a good fit for me or not. Over time, I realized that this mentality was actually pushing me further away from my goals. I started my business to live life on my own terms, not the terms of my clients!
I had to learn to stay true to myself. Declining projects that didn’t align with my values. Being authentic and transparent in all aspects of my journey, and building relationships with people who understand and respect me.
I had to learn how to say no and set boundaries as a business owner. It wasn’t easy, but it was necessary if I wanted to build a sustainable business that I love. And now, I’m really excited about where my business is going. Having this mindset allows me to attract clients who are similar to me – often other moms who are busy building businesses and raising families. These are women who understand what it’s like to try to balance everything, and who have set their own boundaries accordingly. And I LOVE what we are able to accomplish together! Working with other women and helping them tell their stories online is so gratifying.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I’m a suburban girl and try to avoid trekking into the city, especially in Atlanta traffic. But, I love showing others a good time! For my outdoorsy friends, we would definitely take a hike up Kennesaw Mountain. After working up our appetite we would stop by Marietta Square Market for a bite to eat. I love all of the options, especially if you have family members that want to try different cuisines.
At some point during the week, we’d also stop by the Battery! I love Cru Food & Wine Bar. It’s always nice to walk around, window shop, and kiddos can play on the turf. On Saturday, we’d head to Marietta Square Farmer’s Market for fresh fruits, veggies, and flowers. Before leaving, it’s a must to check out the amazing hand-crafted goods at the artisan market. It would be a great time in the suburbs, no highways needed!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I am endlessly grateful for my husband for believing in me and my dreams. He is my biggest cheerleader and has been instrumental in supporting the growth of my business.
As an entrepreneur’s daughter, I am also thankful for my dad. I filed my LLC in his office in July 2019. If it weren’t for him, I might not have had the courage to step into entrepreneurship! I am grateful for him setting an example for me that you can earn a living for yourself as a business owner.
And, of course, I am thankful for the Internet community. I’m so grateful to connect with others and share my journey through social media!
