Meet Julie Rudziensky | Designer, Maker, and Curator

We had the good fortune of connecting with Julie Rudziensky and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Julie, what inspires you?
I am most inspired by other creative business women – Justina Blakeney, Nikki Reed, Madison Rae Holler, Avery Williamson… Women who not only have immense creative talent, but also a strong business sense. Women who stick to their guns, create things they truly love that aren’t just for the masses. I am also inspired by women who excel in very male dominated industries, especially the women in the Michigan design community in the 1950’s and 60’s who were giving the men a run for their money in automotive and furniture design.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I love to wear many hats. I am a jewelry designer, automotive paint designer, CMF designer, beadweaver, vintage collector, and a nature enthusiast. I hope what sets me apart is that I never put myself in a box. I’ve never felt the need to have a distinct ‘brand’ or ‘style’. I just make, and dress however I am feeling. I am inspired mainly by other makers, artists, and people really into plants and mycology. I have such a fascination and obsession with how things ‘could be’. I never want to stop growing, learning new mediums, or meeting new people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.

Well being in Metro Detroit – Here are my top spots. My fiance and I are big foodies – so a lot of my favorite spots are in that vein. For nature exploring I love Cranbrook House & Gardens and beach glass hunting on Belle Isle. For food my favorite spots are Second Best, Chartreuse, The Bronx, Mon Jin Lau, Ottava Via, Supinos Pizzeria, Moose Preserve, and of course our favorite Michigan chain, Olga’s.

My favorite creative spots are definitely any Cranbrook Art or Science Museum Exhibit, The Kresge Court at the DIA, and going to see any show at Library Street Collective.

Best small business shopping spots are Nora Detroit, Nest/ City Bird in Midtown – then when I head up to our lake house it’s Betsie Bay Furniture, Shelter 336, 254 South, and an ice cream from The Scoop in Frankfort.

For antique hunting my favorite local spot is Oddfellows in Berkley.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I would like to dedicate my shoutout to Sandra Olave, Rebecca Waldmeir, Jennifer Widrick, Anne Rudziensky, Carol Caruso,  and Diane McDonald. These are women who, whether they knew it or not, massively shaped who I am today by believing in me and supporting me through my education and career. I could not be where I am without these strong women. They truly allowed me to believe I am capable of anything I set my mind to.
