We had the good fortune of connecting with Avery Watson and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Avery, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Telling my history was always very important to me, and I didn’t see it at all happening under someone else’s vision. I believe hard work beats talent, and that the talented need help just as the weak need doers; we all need support across the board.
I’ve always known there was some uniqueness to my personality because of the events I produced or performed in such as at Lincoln Center in NYC. Apollo Theater and or other theaters.
I grew to love the history behind urban culture, black literary arts, legendary musicians, and singers, and how Hip-hop impacted me and provided opportunities.
Throughout, my dancing career I’ve experienced various injustices that contributed to wearing my tough skin effortlessly. I respect pure artistry because of my experience playing the piano and violin too. Having my hand in urban culture myself I had the honor of dancing and promoting the Harlem shake and Aunt Jackie a dance form called lite feet. Hip-hop dances were instrumental and still are lite feet grew to popularity which Diddy insisted on bringing to the big screens.
Of course, training and extra-curriculum activities such as boot camps, programs, and dance companies were all behind the process of understanding artist development to provide within my services at my company Multi-Artistry Ent.
However, I didn’t want to become a jack of all trades and a master of none; I was not accepted to NYU but I decided to study journalism and multi-media communications and minored in Dance and Theatre earning my BA from Lehman College in The Bronx, NY.
I decided to start a PR agency shortly after my position at Bad Boy Ent as an Executive Assistant. I was asked to assist executives with bio writing and they noticed I was able to put creatively produce the writing materials.
Without the proper support and overall great public image in entertainment, where would most artists and big corporations be? I was once that artist that did not have a (me); that someone who is quite eager to see your success. Being able to contribute to the flow of a person’s equilibrium when they are a public figure is very important. I was forced to get my career in order after a short-term position. So many doors were closed and I decided to open my door for myself and so many others. I wanted to fight for others once I had established my brand. I fell in love with pushing other people’s stories who dare to put their work ethic into their culture in a passionate way.
Multi Artistry Ent became a hub for artists, actors, brands, and public figures in which I was able to provide Public Relations, Event PR, Marketing, and Management servicing over 75+ clients from 2019- to 2022.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Multi Artistry Ent is a full-service PR agency and brand management company that believes anything is possible. As CEO of my business, my brand “MsArtistry” started to buzz throughout the industry which led me to create a business of my own. Understanding how all sectors function together such as gaining more experience in this field by interning from 2010-2013 in such companies as ASCAP, Sony Music/RCA Records, MBK Entertainment, Sony Music/RED Distribution, and Sean Combs Enterprise.
I became a game-changer in the industry by providing transferable skills to all areas of entertainment, mentorship, and philanthropic initiatives which created my own business Multi Artistry Ent
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
My new favorite spot in ATL is the DancinCrepeATL; in which Yandy Smith usually greets her guest and seats her guest while dancing. I truly love that selflessness and I love to dance. And if someone is visiting NYC I would suggest Harlem Social in Harlem, NY which provides an upscale dining experience with a mix of urban tunes and creative drinks. Working as a publicist I am always around hyped events or lavish things so when I am relaxing or hanging out I would rather it be mostly a chill experience.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Raja Rose deserves so much credit for my success; may he rest in peace and may we get justice for him. So many leading industry leaders saw the hard work that went into putting his campaigns together. Having an urban desi artist from an Indian background was a culture shock within the black music scene we didn’t wait for people to make room for us. We used strategy and creative showmanship that showed that went well into Raja Rose campaigns. May we all blossom into what we are meant to be not who they want us to be states “Raja Rose”. My advice for any manager is to have a proper exit strategy when managing artists and for publicists starting from the bottom I suggest clarity when providing services. And to have proper paperwork that protects all parties and timelines explaining your work scope.
