We had the good fortune of connecting with Karin Rojas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Karin, what is the most important factor behind your success?
The most important factor behind my business success is that I am a high risk taker. I am a person who would invest 50k or 4000 hours on a job or an idea that has proven to not work; however, by my naturally innovative trait, I consistently make projects work in an orthodox way. I have been blessed to have been born with a designer talent. I use this talent to reinvent the wheel in design, whether it’s a house remodeling, fashion couture project, or even a problem solving situation. In the business that I currently own, Zulema Custom Interiors, I design cars, boats and aircraft interiors that are intended for show due to my color scheme, various patterns, and or 3D features. Again, the high risk taking is always at showcase.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Other than being a female, which is rare in my industry, I am excessively passionate about my work. I have managed to be able to do all my jobs from start to finish without the help of a strong man to have my back. I also have a strong fashion design background which is visible on my work. In addition, I have a heavy construction background where I learned to use many handheld tools. The mixture of my handy background, my artistic talent and passion is what differentiates my business from the competition. I am “the handy seamstress”. I got to this point in business by working for various local upholstery shops who were not willing to pay for my skillset. I was always underpaid and overworked; however, I told myself that getting underpaid was an investment. This is because everywhere I worked, I always managed to learn a new skill, or use a new gadget that I was previously unfamiliar with. Till today, I see all that experience as an investment. I would have never gotten to this peak point without my lengthy previous experience.
I want the world to know that life will always be better as long as you have that drive. Passion is everything!
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I love the beach so much that the place i would take my friend is on the boardwalk. I love the free concerts and restaurants. There are four oceanfront states at 7th, 17th, 24th, and 31st Streets. I love my good “Catch 31” for drinks and hang out spot.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
i was metored by two women who came in my life while i was in the process of building my Zulema empire. Debra Dandridge of Dress for Success Hampton Roads taught me the basis of running a business in a professional setting. She set up my LLC and was there throughout the starting process o Zulema.
LIzzi London, an international fashion designer, mentored me in the creative basis. She invited me to the world of couture fashion design and runway. This aquired knowledge assisted me into the creative field,
Both of these strong women have build their successful businesses and did not mind mentoring others. I see them as two angels who came into my life. They both gave me a gift.
