We had the good fortune of connecting with Baiyina Jihad and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Baiyina, we’d love to hear more about how you thought about starting your own business?
Hey Judy was created to solve my problem with wearing earrings. My ears are not pierced, so searching for clip-on earrings that are stylish and mature is very hard. I heard about polymer clay earrings and was very curious about the process. Initially, I was hesitant to try it because I didn’t view myself as a creative person. I decided to give it a try! It was very relaxing and therapeutic. Of course, I had to go through trial and error to make a successful pair of clip-on earrings. Then, my friends and family wanted to make them a pair.

I decided to start documenting my journey by creating my social profile. Once the news spread, everyone stopped me to ask about making earrings for them. I finally decided to turn my hobby into a business. I name my company after my mom’s name. She was my inspiration on what I believe a faithful Judy will embody by wearing my earrings.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Hey Judy was birthed out of a moment of rest. For over five years, I was an educator and entrepreneur who focused on building a service to support students in advancing their literacy skills. Like many Americans, the pandemic forced me to take a pause and reassess my life. During this time, I was able to take a pause from work and focus on my mental and physical health. It then bloomed into an exciting period of connecting deeply with my inner child and creativity. I simply wanted to create for the sake of creating.

Hey Judy is simply a product born out of the passion for getting to know me and my new capabilities. I’m grateful for the bonus opportunity to share my new love with clients who love it as well! Although making the earrings is my passion, transforming a hobby into a business did not come without challenges. I did not have a plan of action and I was not sure of my direction for a while. Then I started to reach out to my community and friends who own e-commerce businesses for advice. Leveraging the power of society was the best decision I made to become an entrepreneur. The advice and support they gave me allowed me to continue to preserve and have fun in growing Hey Judy Clay.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
The inspiration behind the brand is my own personal Wonder Woman; My mother! The brand is named after her because she is truly one of a kind. When a client wears a pair of Hey Judy earrings, they embody creativity, fun, uniqueness, and love…just like her.
