Meet Reece, Kendi, and Nahla’s Playroom | Content Creators and Actresses

We had the good fortune of connecting with Reece, Kendi, and Nahla’s Playroom and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Reece, Kendi, and Nahla’s Playroom, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?

Reece: Watching other Youtube videos got me excited and I wanted to use my imagination to create my own videos that were fun and for kids. That’s how we started Reece Playroom when I was 3, and then my mom had Nahla and then Kendi. So now we call our channel Reece, Nahla, and Kendi’s Playroom.

Robert (dad): As a parent, it was important for us to find shows with people that looked like our girls. It’s important for them to be able to see themselves when they are watching videos and TV. A lot of these platforms are not created with Black and Brown people in mind. So, we have to create content that’s for little girls and boys to feel seen and heard.

Macade (mom): Now that we are almost 5 years in, and have added to their creative community, an Instagram Page, Facebook, and TikTok page, we are realizing that the benefit has not just been for our girls, and followers, but it has been a great way for our family and friends near and far to keep up with the girls and share in the memories that they have created along the way. In addition to their social media platforms, the girls have really started to feed their desire to get into acting, and have been able to branch off from just doing their YouTube videos to booking commercials, music videos, and feature films. So, where they have started is definitely not going to be where they finish.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
Macade (mom): When we started out making videos, it was really just a way to give the girls something to do rather than just watching other people on their tablets. It kept them active and engaged with each other and as a family. So some of our earlier videos were mimicking what they were watching and were into at the time. I would say what sets the girls’s social media platforms apart from others is that they are just making videos about what they like and are interested in, which makes it a much more authentic experience. When you are being yourself, that makes for the most organic and unique content. Now making and editing the video is not an easy task at all. Sometimes it takes hours or even days worth of footage that gets edited down to about 2-5 minutes worth of video content. I work full-time, and I have spent many late nights working on their videos, trying to figure out the editing software, working on the right tags and titles. There are so many layers involved. I’ve learned going forward to follow my kids’s lead. Kids don’t understand limits and boundaries. So, we try to do our best as parents to let them venture out as far as their imagination will take them, and instead of hindering them because of our own fears, we instead give them the tools along they way to help bring their ideas to life. What we want others to know about Reece, Nahla, and Kendi’s Playroom is that the videos and creative content that are shared by the girls are done so with kids and families in mind, but they are also about representation. Sometimes they share Black-owned companies whose products we use at home, talk about different curly hair products they use on their hair, promote self love, and loving the skin they are in. We are also about to launch their Etsy page Nareke (which includes all of their names) that is going to help them learn different aspects of business and entrepreneurship.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Nahla: We like to do everything as a family. The most fun for us is going to a park that has a fun playground.

Macade (mom): Downtown Suwanee always has family friendly events and festivals. The splash pad is always a treat during the hot days. North Georgia really has some of the most beautiful and scenic parks I’ve ever seen. Sometimes we just spend a day exploring the local park. Sometimes, we’ll treat to girls to some tasty donuts at this little spot called J and J Donuts. The owner is so kind and friendly. Another favorite spot of ours is Flavor Rich Restaurant. The food there is everything! Kendi is there anything you want to add?

Kendi: I love to go swimming and play at the park!

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
We would like to dedicate our shoutout to our tribe. Our family and friends who have helped along the way by sharing their videos and content. Since the pandemic, it’s been so important to be able to lean on your family and friends for help. Even moreso with the girls being really blessed with booking all of their acting gigs, we cannot be everywhere all the time and we have really have had to rely on our supportive tribe, including, their aunts, uncles, grandparents, and close friends. Last, but not least, we’d like to thank God.
