We had the good fortune of connecting with Devesh Bhan and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Devesh, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
LIFE IS RISKY. From the time one is born, they are at risk. Risk is not a theory or a concept that needs to be clarified in our minds however is a part of growth and success. Anything new that you try has the potential for it to fail or not be liked by the audience and that is where learning and development come into play. I have always emphasised personal development and mindset growth by reading the right books, listening to motivational podcasts and looking inward to find answers to all your questions and be self-aware. It is not about quantity but about the quality of actions that determine the results. Risk can be minimised but cannot be eliminated with the right planning and calculated steps towards the goals and ambitions that one upholds. Values of an individual shape us all as one impacts all and all impact one as per my understanding of sociology and spiritual science. Every time I venture into a diverse role at work or meet new people, I am always at risk of failing or not meeting loyal, trustworthy and respectful individuals however the only way to figure things out is to try and eliminate the options. Clarity is said to be power and the only way you can be clear is by learning what you exactly want by trial and error method and knowing what you don’t. Remember, that learning is not only by your experiences but also by others around you for faster and better growth as the best of people can miss out on details and make mistakes. Mistakes are only a stepping stone and not the final result. Life has a lot to offer and the one who has the courage to take risks is the one who lives the journey well. The best way I am able to take risks daily is by thinking about the worst possible outcome and preparing myself for that too. If you can be ready for such challenges as well then you are ready for that risk. Risk is not the same as gambling whereas is a mindset and understanding of oneself and this universe as its inevitable. Some take small risks whereas others take bigger but no one can say they have never done something risky in their life. Initially, my plans were different and so was my field of study in high school however I had developed a deep passion for the hospitality industry so I took a risk leaving my previous field. I was super confused about what I wanted to do with my life initially however I have applied the above theory and method of elimination in my life to make it more fulfilled and passion-driven. Taking the first job is a risk, starting a business is a risk, changing a job is a risk, diversifying a business is a risk, getting married is a risk, making new friends is a risk just like anything that throws you out of your comfort zone and brings unforeseen challenges. It is these risks that make us feel alive. Allow yourself to live a little and make mistakes.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I am a passionate professional who gives the utmost importance to customer satisfaction and value distribution. My core values are loyalty, trust and mutual respect. In any business, people, I believe are the driving force and are the most important aspect. Human capital is many times underrated however a true leader is the one who works for their people and not vice versa. It is good to desire and even better to work for it. There is always someone you are inspiring around you. There are certain characteristics like patience, resilience, hunger for knowledge and growth that have taken me so far. My mindset refined and defined me throughout my school life. Nothing comes easy in life. Sleepless nights, stress, the anxiety of deadlines and pressure are part of us only until we realise that everything is temporary. I have always been curious about business and management since my childhood. I realized very early, that it is our attitude and certain characteristics that differentiate us from the crowd. Therefore, focusing on personal development, mindset and business had become my area of interest and is now, part of me. You can find me on Instagram and Linkedin.
There was a period in my life when I was lost and didn’t have a clue what to do, to an extent that I was failing subjects in school and was not motivated to study further. I wanted to set up my own food truck, was distracted and needed clarity. I would like to stress at the moment that formal education is not needed but learning and knowledge are the keys to success. School is just a property and a building without teachers with knowledge and students with curiosity.
I have learned a lot by introspecting and eliminating my possible options. The beauty of knowledge is that when you don’t know something you think you know everything whereas when you know something you realise there is an ocean of knowledge pending for you to acquire. There were mishaps as I was battling with myself. At the point when one doesn’t have clarity, I believe it’s hard to be content. Henceforth, it gets important to discover what intrigues you most. I likewise accept that this stage teaches you a ton and it is important to discover what you are truly passionate about.
Future is obscure and I think that life is the best adventure one can be at. My enthusiasm for business and self-improvement has additionally driven me to become an active college community member in Switzerland where I have taken up many roles and also got the opportunity to represent my college off-campus in several events being in the top 20% of my batch in the Eta Sigma Delta honour society.
Diversity in ideas, exposure to various cultures and a flexible mindset helped me grow into a more dynamic personality. Today, I try inspiring people on several social media platforms including Instagram and LinkedIn as it takes zero pennies to spread inspiration and to help individuals who need some direction.
How about we develop together as together we win!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
I love to travel in general and I am not biased as I am in the industry but I genuinely believe that the more you travel the more you learn and have a wider perspective on life. People say the world is small as we are all more connected than ever before however the culture, food and experiences can only be lived by going to those places and meeting people face to face. If my best friend is with me for a week I would say I would focus on more authentic places of any country than just widely known places. The streets speak a lot about the place and the culture and hence visiting places with authentic street food would be first on my list. Then come the historical monuments and museums that could tell me about the past of the city and its people. I would try to live with the citizens and speak to local people to learn how they live and what occasions they celebrate. Every country and person is different and tells you a lot about where they come from. Eventually going to the most popular destinations and restaurants would be ideal as you can judge that I am a foodie.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would not say that any incident was the sole contributor to my successes however I learn consistently and try to meet people who share different views and values in their life. I believe that learning is an experiential process which can be transferred by knowing and understanding the failures of others as well. Being flexible and patient with people is the key. To be a great leader you need to be first a great follower. Be careful about who and what you follow as blind faith can be detrimental to success. one needs to question where they are heading and then follow the people who have already reached there. You won’t be able to copy someone completely as you are a unique human being and hence your version of success will be created. I learn from my environment, the people around me and reading the right books written in the fields of my interest by the top professionals, which help me grow my mindset and broaden my perspective toward a brighter future for myself by providing value to others around me. I have always liked to be close to reality and possibilities and hence I read non-fiction books on management, marketing and sales. At times when I don’t get time, I read short quotes. On Instagram, I also create content that involves. Life lessons, business tips and quotes on my stories. My parents however deserve credit for whoever I am so far as they provided the care, love, support and the right environment for me to be able to build myself. I believe that the blessings of God, parents and elders took me so far and I wish to take well wishes and progress further.
