We had the good fortune of connecting with Annah Aman and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Annah, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
Without a doubt: implementing the client’s vision. That’s a concept in our industry that is both under-appreciated and a lot more nuanced than it sounds. With new clients, it means finding the intersection of what my client tells me they want and what I know is possible. Sometimes there’s perfect harmony there, while other times I need to work with them to find a realistic solution I’m confident they’ll love. With existing clients, I think there’s a tendency over time to become so familiar with your techniques or their particular formula that you switch to cruise control and stop paying attention to the subtle signs your client may be giving you, whether it be a want for change or even dissatisfaction. In the end, my clients come to me because they know I’ve got talent and expertise, so I don’t waver in the confidence I have in my skills. But, that can’t overshadow my clients’ personal style, and I think that balance has been a huge component of my success.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
If you’re into a great concert or comedy show, you can’t beat The Tabernacle in downtown Atlanta. It’s a modified old church and an amazingly intimate venue. Some great acts that come through town perform there, and I recently caught John Mulaney’s comedy routine a few months back–hilarious! I also like to frequent the new restaurants that pop up around town. Atlanta has become the center of the universe for incredible chefs of all kinds and you really can’t miss at any of their spots.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
My apprenticeship under Master Colorist Jamie Latiolais is the cornerstone of my technique. Jamie was a wizard with color, and he taught me how to breach the wall of ubiquity and find creative and magnificent solutions for my future clients. He helped me stretch the limits of what is possible, which in turn gives my clients options they might not otherwise find. And there was a certain nuance and subtlety with Jamie’s color that I was able to emulate and adopt, and that is expressed with a level of elegance in my clients’ styles that would likely not otherwise be there.
