We had the good fortune of connecting with DeJuan Boyd and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi DeJuan, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I’m from Atlanta, Ga….Old Atlanta…before we were on the map as we now know it to be…when we were still being called country. I think Andre 3000 summed it up in the 1995 Source Awards when he poignantly said…’The South got something to say!’ I think there’s a part of us that had something to prove and we strived for that respect. That never leaves you because there’s a drive that’s attached to that…you wanna let ’em know that you you’re just as dope if not doper.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
A few good questions! What I’m most proud of is that I just never gave up. What I’m most excited about are the opportunities I have before me…the people I’m working with as well as the possibilities. How I got to where I am today professionally was to just simply I kept going. It’s not an easy journey at all but you can get thru it if you’re determined enough. It’s definitely not easy!… not at all.

You have to reconfigure everything you’ve been taught since you were small. If you’re good…if you do well on this test…
you can move fwd to the next phase or level…No! That’s not how this works…you have to keep working & have faith.
I’ve overcome challenges because I’ve always believed that this is what i’m destined for…I’m following my passion and there’s a certain freedom that comes with that. If you believe that you’re living your purpose there’s nothing that can deter you from that. The most important lessons I’ve learned along the way is to continue to believe & keep going. No progress happens while you’re standing still…always maintain fwd motion. What I want the world to know about me, my brand and my story is that i just simply believed and moved in that light…the light of possibility. Everything I create is a part of me…whether it’s Music, Graphic Design, DJ’ing, etc…the goal is to always create & cultivate energy from an organic & honest place.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Wow! There’s a lot of hidden gems in Atlanta. Depending on the vibe and what’s going on that particular week. There’s a lot of restaurants…low key spots…studios…speakeasy’s…lounges…just depends on what the vibe calls for. The city is growing & expanding as we speak so there’s always something new going on. As a native I try to stay away from the more touristy spots. Don’t know if that comes across as me tryna protect the spots I frequent but it’s always something new to check out in Atlanta.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
If there is anyone I could dedicate a ShoutOut to is Saideh Browne. We crossed paths at a time when she was working in HipHop as KRS-One’s assistant and I was attending the Temple of HipHop lectures he would have weekly in Atlanta. I respected her hustle & how she moved…she still inspires me to this day. She encouraged me, believed in me, taught me how to move. ShoutOut to Sai Boogie!
