We had the good fortune of connecting with Wendell Scott and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Wendell, what is the most important factor behind your success?
Being authentic! In a world dominated by social media, it is always most important to be genuine in every single thing I do. I want to have a genuine connection with those I interact with on projects. It’s not a “one and done” deal with me. If I’m talking about a product/person/business, it means I genuinely love them. In turn, I’m able to build and maintain that trust with my audience! It’s a win-win, baby!
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I’ve always been a lover of local business. I started expanding on that love at the University of Georgia where I graduated with a B.A. in Digital/Broadcast Journalism. During college, I hosted a talk show. Had an audience and everything. Yes, I know…dramatic. But, I wanted to somehow tell the stories of those doing great things, not only in Athens, but in the state of Georgia. So, this was where I practiced my interviewing skills, booking guests, managing a production staff, etc. This eventually led to my experience at Atlanta’s CW. During my time, I was able to combine both my passion for storytelling and people with the power of social media. Working on our Creative Services team, I was able to build the voice of our social, tailoring it to our Atlanta audience. This proved to be an exciting challenge for me because it was the first time I was analyzing trends, creating original content, live-tweeting! All of the fun (but, necessary) things! And it proved to be successful, we grew our audience/engagement over our three social media platforms over the course of my 2.5 years there. And it wasn’t just about growth – it was about the community. We created a community-based program, TAKE 3, which would showcase events and businesses around the metro area. I wanted this to be our main focus because it would solidify our place in the community we serve. And, it did. Every week, we’d do things from experiencing a new attraction at Six Flags Over Georgia to trying a new gumbo recipe at LaGarde in Chamblee. The purpose was to build upon the community that surrounded us, and I am happy to say that’s something we truly did!
I’ve taken that purpose beyond Atlanta’s CW to my personal brand. We are in a world where we are inundated with products, businesses, restaurant specials and more. Beyond the fancy new dish, what’s the story behind it? That’s where I come in. What did it take to build this business? What struggles did you triumph over in order to get to where you’re at today? These questions are always in the back of our minds…it just takes one person to ask them. And that person is me!
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
A week?! Bestie, we gotta get you to stay forever! Okay, here’s what we’d plan:
Monday:
Breakfast – Banjo Coffee in Decatur – grab a nitro cold brew with one of those Gas Station Biscuits filled with Pine Street Market bacon/chicken sausage/fresh eggs and topped with fresh jam
Hole in Fun – Puttshack Atlanta – I’m no good at mini golf, but I love bright lights and cute designs lol
Dinner – Velvet Taco at the Interlock – that Spicy Tikka Chicken taco and Ranch Water calls me every time.
Tuesday:
Outdoor Fun – Hiking Stone Mountain – this hike will never get old to me, and for those that’ve never been to Atlanta, I always make sure we do this…mainly because I want to see how they’ll conquer the steep railing section.
Lunch – Stoned Pizza – Farm Fresh pizza post-hike? Yes, please.
Wednesday:
BEER – Firemaker Brewing Co – Trivia night here is tops! And, now we can pair Scoville Hot Chicken from right next door with our beer (even though we can’t answer any question correctly).
Thursday:
Dinner – Hopstix – #1 fan. Great beer (brewed right behind the kitchen). Great food. Great people.
Theatre – Fox Theatre Marquee Club – during this week, I’m definitely scheduling a touring Broadway in Atlanta show at the Fox Theatre. We make it a full night with access to the Fox Theatre Marquee Club for a premium experience!
Friday:
Shopping – Rooted Trading Co – Shop for locally made goods, then rent a bike to ride along the Silver Comet Trail
Dinner – Suga’s Cheese Shoppe & Cafe – literally everything you can imagine with pimento cheese on top…even, pimento cheesecake.
Saturday:
BEER – Monday Night Brewing – Tie one on with me, bestie! My favorite is the Blind Pirate IPA
Karaoke – Happy Karaoke – my favorite hole in the wall spot for karaoke on Buford Hwy. Don’t blink, or you’ll miss it!
Dinner – El Rey del Taco – we’re gonna need a good margarita before Sunday.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
Whoosh, the list of support would be endless. But, to narrow it down, I’d start by saying thanks to the lionesses at Brave Public Relations. They’ve literally seen me grow in every stage of my creative journey. Our relationship began in 2013 when I wrote theatre reviews for Atlanta’s CW. Over the years, our relationship grew into something amazing! Working hand in hand to enhance the stories of various businesses, individuals and events through various forms of media. Through their relationship, I’ve learned how to stand in my professional power, work with integrity and know the worth of my work. And most importantly, it’s afforded me so many opportunities to experience and share the successes of local businesses in our city. So, thank you Lionesses for all of the support! I cannot wait to continue our work together!
