We had the good fortune of connecting with Kenya ‘ K Cams ‘ Campbell and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Kenya ‘ K Cams ‘, can you tell us more about your background and the role it’s played in shaping who you are today?
I’m originally from Lexington, Kentucky, but I’ve lived in Georgia since I was 6—most people tell me that means I’m from here aha..Looking back at my childhood I can see why I gravitated towards film. I was very animated as a kid (and still am when I’m around those I’m close to). I’m sure growing up as an only child definitely helped me find ways to be creative and have fun. I spent a lot of time watching movies and would reenact some of my favorite scenes with my toys—that slowly led to me telling my mom I wanted to be an actress. Well, I didn’t straight out say “hey ma, I want to be an actress” it kinda just went like this: I was watching the Cosby show one night and pointed at Rudy on the screen, then I said, very confidently, “I want to do that”. My mom took that as I wanted to be an actress. Maybe at the time I did. I was only 4. So…I did the acting and modeling thing from about age 5 to 13. Once I became a teenager, all the anxieties and shyness started kicking in which made going to auditions a nightmare. That sucked. I ended up quitting acting and modeling altogether but I desperately needed to find a way to be a part of this thing (film) without being in front of the camera. *Enters, behind the scenes careers.* Freshman year of high school was the first time I realized film production was a realistic career path. I signed up for a ‘broadcast & video production’ elective class and the rest was…well let’s just fast forward to present day!

My upbringing definitely influenced my passion for film..and really anything artistic. When I’m brainstorming ideas for a new film project, I really turn into a BIG kid.

Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work. What sets you apart from others?
Hmm, I think one thing that sets me apart from others in this film and photo world is that I’m actually passionate about what I do. Film and photography has become a very trendy career path and it seems like a lot of people are picking up cameras to shoot their favorite celebrity without really caring about the craft. It’s very important for me to build relationships with the artists or brands I’m working with–I need to have a connection to their art or product in a meaningful way. It’s never been about money for me, its all about love and creativity…

I spend a lot of time practicing, watching tutorials, and most importantly…failing. Every mistake I’ve ever made has given me an immeasurable amount of knowledge and experience. The road to being a “professional” or master of your craft is built on mistakes. Regardless of where you are in your career you have to keep learning. One of the biggest challenges I face everyday is imposter syndrome. I’m very critical of my work…I blame it on my virgo tendencies…but its real! I don’t know if it’s something I’ll ever overcome but it does keep me striving be better than my last piece of work. I guess I can live with that.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Aight, bestie is coming to the A! I’m going to set this hypothetical scene in October because fall is my favorite season! First things first we’re waking up to eat breakfast at Rosies (a black owned breakfast spot that caters to vegans and carnivores). Then, we’ll hit up Iwi Fresh for some all natural facials, because self care is the best care. After that, we’ll cruise through the city on the way to the Civil Rights Museum because museums are dope! Next up is a walk in Piedmont park to burn off the breakfast calories…wait, never mind we stopped at Sublime Doughnuts before the walk…The sun is setting so it’s time to slide to Netherworld Haunted House for some adrenaline pump. After being chased with chainsaws, we’ll grab some good Cuban Cuisine at LaFonda Latina.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Love & Support! That part! My family and friends mean everything to me and all of them have supported me in one way or another throughout my life. I’m grateful for them and our closeness. I’d have to give the biggest credit to my mom. She’s the reason I’m where I’m at today. She made the decision to move out of the city she’s known all of her life, so that her 4 year old daughter could pursue a career in acting. She’s the most courageous, loving and hard working person I know. She took a chance on me and sacrificed it all so I could live out my dreams.
