We had the good fortune of connecting with Nancy Joy Dozier and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Nancy Joy, how do you think about risk?
I equate risk to faith, they are synonymous in my world. I have come to understand that there is nothing worth having that won’t require I qualify for it by engaging in risk taking. My life and my journey as an entrepreneur is hallmarked by turning point moments that can only be described as faith in action. As a CEO, I believe that what I do as a Life Coach, Speaker, Author and Personal Pastor is God’s work. I believe that I was created for this. With that in mind, I know that God is obligated to fulfill His purpose in my life. He’s going to sit me at the right tables, connect me with the right people, and open wide the gates of opportunity. But what I am responsible for doing requires risk. It demands that I activate faith like Noah who built an ark, which had never been done, to anticipate something that the earth had never seen before; rain. EVERYTIME I create a new system, a new model, everytime I innovate and begin to rethink what is possible it’s just like building an ark. When I wrote and self published my book “ Decree A Thing: Creating Your World With Your Words”, It felt crazy to write about manifesting purpose. Who would want to read that? Would anyone get what I had been divinely tasked to release or would I sell 5 whole copies to my family and whoever my mother convinced to support her baby. It was the not knowing that kept me up at night. The hope that all of the emotional, physical, and financial investment was worth it was my execution of faith. It was my driving force. It has taken risk to become a women that I can wake up and be proud of everyday. A woman of principle and integrity. It has taken risk to throw my name in the bucket in the self development industry, which many are saying is overly saturated, and experience success. It has taken risk to continue learning and investing in myself so I can be better, more efficient and more effective. Its taken risk to create programming, host online events in this Covid19 climate especially, and work toward enlarging my customer base. Not having a guarantee that all my effort would pay off is literally the definition of risk. Even with the best fail proof plans there is always a chance that you’re vision will not translate and you will have wasted time, money and energy. But somehow, I think that the very thing that makes taking risk dreadful is equally what makes it rewarding. So remember how Noah had to build something that he had no grid and no language for in front of people who most likely thought he had lost his mind? Up until that point, according to Biblical history there had never been precipitation, which probably means the word “rain” did not exist yet. Well, once Noah did his part by taking a risk, purpose and passion kissed and it rained for forty days and forty nights. This was the birthing of a new paradigm, new possibilities and new vocabulary. The greatest risks that I have taken in my life and in business have produced the greatest rain of success, blessing and peace. I have seen profits double And even triple at times, I’ve seen my client roster expand exponentially, my measurable impact and influence has exceeded my set goals. Opportunities have come knocking because I chose to take risks. In full disclosure, there have been a few times that I’ve stepped out in faith and fallen flat on my face. I gave it everything and made big bold moves only to be left dumbfounded. Even then, those moments still ended up working for me. Sometimes it was weeks later and sometimes years later. But I can see how even the risks that did not profit me in the moment greatly benefited me in the long run. Nothing is ever wasted! It may feel crazy to take risks and build an ark, but there’s nothing that accelerates the flood gates of abundance like the completion of an ark. I can’t tell you how it happens but somehow the rain knows how to locate arks. Start building!
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others? What are you most proud of?
My company is called Joy Life Enterprises LLC. We are a boutique firm that specializes in assisting clients through their greatest transitions by helping each client create their desired future. We offer Life Coaching and Personal Pastor services for individuals, workshops and group coaching for organizations and corporations. I am most proud of the impact that Joy Life has had. This year especially has presented such challenges due to the pandemic. After a year of planning The largest Annual event I host had to be cancelled. I decided to quickly pivot and move to an online platform, which proved to be a phenomenal move. We were expecting between 300-400 attendees in person, but were able to gather over 8k virtually. I can’t quantify what this did for my faith and excitement for the future. Since then, I have successfully hosted two webinars to sold out crowds, doubling attendance goals each time. I became a certified life Coach 4 years ago, with my husband’s encouragement. I had been doing this for years, even as a pastor but just didn’t have the credentials. Once I completed the program and started my business, it took time for my immediate environment to respond to my new journey. There were months when I didn’t have a single client. I determined to keep growing, to engage social media, build my network and expand my reach. I knew that if I created an exceptional experience for each client, kept marketing myself, and remained consistent it would eventually produce. And it has! Entrepreneurship is not for the faint at heart. It’s not something you get involved in for fun. You have to have discipline, work ethic, be open to constructive criticism, be teachable, all while maintaining your creativity and love for what you do. I have learned to focus like never before. There are times you are working on projects and you have to push through fatigue. Sometimes I’ve not been well and still had to show up to honor a speaking engagement. I have had to invest into myself and take courses to help my efficiency and systems. I have spent thousands in self development and it was a sacrifice. But my dream is worth it! I want the world to know that as a brand I am committed to changing and impacting lives. Granted there are metrics that are used to measure the health of a business, but what can’t be immediately seen on paper is a changed life. As a brand, my win is determined by wether people are impacted by what I do. This in turn translates to sales and productivity. People are my priority and that will never change.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Atlanta has so much culture to enjoy! Here are a few places I would want to take someone who is visiting. *Atlanta Beltline ( Ponce City Market) is a must. The outdoor murals, biking trail, great food stops and shops are an entire experience. Also the City Winery is a great venue for world class live music and a local favorite for wine lovers. *Little Five Points is probably the epicenter of all things eclectic in the city. It is the definition of the word “VIBE”. You’ll find long time beloved atlanta institutions. There is always a great performance on deck at the Variety Playhouse as well as an array of super talented street performers. *Le Petit Marche is the spot for Brunch! Set in the side of the city historically known for being at the heart of the civil rights movement,This quaint eatery is black owned and serves up delicious southern fair with a twist. Try their grits and thank me later! *Martin Luther King Junior Center is a place that everyone should see when visiting Atlanta. From the gorgeous Rose garden to the tour of his childhood home, this place makes a demand on your humanity. It forces you to see what sacrifice looks like and further enforces the statement being echoed around the globe; Black Lives Matter. Chic Fil A Headquarters is a wellspring of inspiration. Every entrepreneur, creative, innovator and anyone aspiring to build something great MUST WALK THROUGH THIS PLACE. First of all, the Chic Fil A chicken sandwich is made by baby angels and is a national treasure! Truett Cathy built an organization that has changed the landscape of the entire city and continues to defy traditional business practices while continuing to be exceptionally successful. For anyone that walks to the beat of their own drum and has strong convictions for their business…don’t miss this treasure of a place.
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Eric L. Dozier, my husband. Knowing he will catch me if I fall takes some of the sting away from taking risks. Linda Arrey-Nkwenti and The Wilde Winner’s Circle. Linda and this amazing community of female founders, CEOs and Innovators continues to resource me as well as create a strong network of support. I dedicate this Shout out to these fierce ladies.
