We had the good fortune of connecting with King Currie and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi King, do you have some perspective or insight you can share with us on the question of when someone should give up versus when they should keep going?
It’s 2015, my pops is gone, and now my mom. For the first time in my life I thought about giving up. Depression is rushing into my everyday thoughts, I was in a real gloomy place. One morning it was like something told me “get up, it’s time now”and I chose life. I promised myself I would choose happiness. I took it one day at a time, and it was the best decision I ever made.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
Whenever I lay some ink on a pad, I’m thinking about that kid, that man or woman that’s going through depression. I know what that’s like. I was there, and I use to wish I had an artist that I could turn to, eventually I became what I wanted in my time of need. I got here just being me. I lost both of my parents, and I have a story just like anybody, I’m just glad I have a platform to get it out. I use to think I had challenges, but honestly this is a blessing. I come from Marion, South Carolina, now I’m here sharing my story on one of the greatest platforms Shoutout Atlanta, that’s amazing. I want the world to know I gave my all to safe every person I could from depression. I gave the world my life and my story. I help somebody get through their day. I help someone realize that life is worth it. There was someone thinking about suicide, they heard my song and changed their mind, I want the world to know that I saved it.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
My favorite place to go in Atlanta is Lenox mall. If you visit Atlanta you have to experience Lenox mall.

The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
Huge shout out to my sister, she’s my best friend. I watched my sister talk about things she wanted and really went out and got it. She taught me how to manifest. She showed me that the world was bigger than Marion, SC. Another shoutout goes to my cousin Jarome, he probably doesn’t know how important he is to me, but he save my life, he was there when nobody was and I’ll never forget that.
