We had the good fortune of connecting with Kirston Wilkins and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kirston, as a parent, what do you feel is the most meaningful thing you’ve done for them?
It’s a lot of thing I try to show my kids a lot of things. I let them be them and express how they feel through clothes, arts and any other way possible . To let them know that you can do something differently than everybody else! And tell them as long as their happy I’m happy and nothing else matters.! Live for them and nobody else.
Please tell us more about your work. We’d love to hear what sets you apart from others, what you are most proud of or excited about. How did you get to where you are today professionally. Was it easy? If not, how did you overcome the challenges? What are the lessons you’ve learned along the way. What do you want the world to know about you or your brand and story?
My business is called Kolours Kosmetics. I make everything by hand (literally) from lip glosses, soaps, body butters, face washes and facial oils. I started with just lip glosses in 2018. I then expanded to matte lip sticks which were doing amazing and I am bringing those back! What sets me apart is that I want to be able to please every shade of black! If you pay a attention to my logo it has different shades of black. I want something for every shade black with all of my products. I don’t want anybody feeling left out.
I got to where I am today by faith, my support system, and pushing myself. It was not easy at all! I took a long break, longer than what I wanted too but I needed that break. I want everybody to know THAT ITS OK TO TAKE A BREAK IF YOU NEED TOO! Do you think the CEOs of these large companies don’t take breaks ? They take them all the time. Don’t over work yourself or burn yourself out trying to out do somebody else. Take your time and work at a pace that fits you!
I’ve learned so much along the way. One of the most important things I’ve learned was to not rush anything. I’m not in competition with anybody but myself . As long as I’m doing better than yesterday that’s all that matters
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
To be honest I am very much chill and a homebody lol. But I will definitely go out to eat. So we would probably spend the week just eating at different restaurants and walking along the belt line and seeing different trade makes such as MLK home, Trap Museum, and whatever else we randomly decide to go see.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I want to give a huge shoutout to my my mom! She’s literally been supporting my dream and anything I want/ wanted to do since the beginning. She’s also been pushing me to do the best I can and not to give up on myself and I truly love her for that!
I want to also give a shoutout to Johnna ! I met her when I was pregnant with my twins 5 years ago but felt like I’ve known her for forever! She’s also been a great listening ear for me and has NEVER judged me for anything I’ve done or thought about doing. I couldn’t ask for a better god mother, friend, sister or cousin that God has truly blessed me with.
Last and not least my tribe! I couldn’t ask for more supportive kids than the ones I have now. No matter what I decide to do they are always right now to me ready for the ride and always willing to test new products and tell me how they really feel.
