Meet Thomas Hamilton | Crochet Fashion Designer

We had the good fortune of connecting with Thomas Hamilton and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Thomas, how has your background shaped the person you are today?
I am from a small town right outside of Decatur called Scottdale. It was known for its drugs, street walkers, and crime. Infact my mother was a street walker with a drug addiction. My brother and I were both born crack babies but by the grace of God we turned out ok. We were adopted by my aunt who raised us with so much love that we began to call
Growing up I dreamed of a better life for my family. I told myself that one day I would make it out and bring my family and friends along for the ride. I wanted to show them that no matter who you are or from that you deserve to see your dreams become a reality. This really is the driving force behind the Gregory Stitch brand. Allowing others to see their self worth and greatness through my clothing.

Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Gregory Stitch is a crochet fashion brand that helps individuals discover the greatness inside of themselves. What sets me apart from the rest of the other fashion brands is that I make all of my masterpieces by hand. Not a sewing machine in sight. Just yarn and a hook.
I am most proud of the fact that I started my brand when I was homeless on the streets and have grown it to where it is today. My brand has been been featured in several publications and has won awards.
I must say that the road from where I started to where I am today want easy at all. I remember telling myself that I’m going to be a famous crochet fashion designer and be known around the world for my garments. While dreaming of a world of bliss I had family and friends laughing at me. Nobody believed that I could possibly take yarn and ask customers to pay over $1k for a garment. Even my closest friends doubted my potential. But I have always been determined and unshakable when it comes to my goals and aspirations. Yes it was hard to keep going while everyone was laughing and talking but somehow I did. And believing in myself they way I did caused others to begin to believe also. Strangers began to cheer me on. Some even donated to my yarn fund. So that was a lesson in itself. It really doesn’t matter what others may think or day about you. It doesn’t matter how many times you try and fail… as long as you keep going and keep believing.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
If my best friend was visiting for a week. I would take them to all of my favorite spots.
First we would go to Little Five Points for some shopping. We both wearing clothes that not everyone is wearing and the shops in Little 5 are the best.
Then we would head right down the street to one of my favorite sushi restaurants Ru Sans right on Morland Ave. They have some of the friendliest servers and the food is amazing yet affordable.
Whilst here we must take one of Kiosh O’Neal ‘s dance classes because we both love dance and his classes are straight fire.
For a night out on the town we must go the the midtown area to visit a few bars such as bulldogs, a very popular spot for black lgbtq men. Then we must pop our heads into Blake’s on the Park, Mixx and Midnight Moon.

Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I dedicate this shoutout to my mentor and godfather Samuel O Williams. The man who help me find my voice when the world was telling me to be silent.
