We had the good fortune of connecting with M.J. Bryant and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi M.J., can you walk us through the thought-process of starting your business?
When I started MB Tutoring, I was a middle school English Teacher in Brooklyn, NYC. It was clear that my students needed private help outside of the classroom. Many of them, 8th graders, were reading on a 5th grade level. Initially i would meet with a group of students at the library. When COVID happened, I was forced to start making “house calls” and tutor online. By the 5 month, we were teaching 40 students across 5 states each week. The growth encouraged me to take my business seriously, so I hired amazing certified teachers to help and we have continued to give students and families the results they need.
Can you give our readers an introduction to your business? Maybe you can share a bit about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
The mission of MB Tutoring is to empower and prepare our students with the desire, skills and confidence needed to succeed in their academic careers and lives. Our relationships with students and families and our determination to teach only what each scholar needs most is what sets us apart from others. In tutoring sessions with MB Tutoring, you don’t have to worry about wasting time or money. Our teachers love to teach and love to see results. Depending on the needs of each individual student our teacher will create a flexible but effective learning plan to satisfy their needs.
I don’t think it was easy to get to this point, but I think what helped us the most is our ability to take feedback. Because we listened to our customers, we evolved to include Spanish sessions, ACT/SAT prep sessions, weekend sessions and Math sessions.
One lesson that I learned is that people love a business that feels like family. As a company, we consistently go the extra mile for our students and families. Right away, we started student of the month awards- where we treat the scholar’s entire family to dinner and dessert because they’ve worked hard in their tutoring sessions. We’ve also met students across the country who needed tutoring but didn’t have a laptop, so like family we’ve donated 23 laptops in our 23 months of operation. We also know that things happen, so our sessions are contract free, affordable and highly effective. We meet each student and family where they are and I want the world to know that MB Tutoring is changing the game for academic instruction period! As a collective, we are 12 teachers/professors that want to see our inner schools changed for the best! Too many of our (African American) students are left behind but pushed ahead in classrooms and schools. It’s time out for shuckin’ and jivin’ and it is time in for us to get back to our historic love of literature, writing and just being a life long learner period.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
If my friends were visiting Atlanta, we would definitely be going to the Trap Museum, The Original Seflie Museum, The Birth Home of Martin Luther King Jr. and every restaurant you can imagine. But to be honest, I am kind of “traditional” I love having dinner or lunch at Papadeaux. For breakfast and late nights, it’s a no brainer, Waffle House or Cookout are definitely for the win! When I feel like eating soul food, I go to Old Lady Gang or Busy Bee Cafe.
To hangout, I usually end up on one of my friend’s couch. I like to visit with friends in-house to cook, play video games and talk politics. If I were to go out, it would be somewhere touristy like Bulldogs or Gold Room. I love a vibe.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
The person that I’d like to dedicate my shoutout to is Taylor Oates. She owns Taylor Concepts and is a remarkable website creator, content creator, graphic designer and more. We went to Florida A & M University together and without her there would be no MB Tutoring. Taylor walked with me step-by-step to do everything from business cards, getting my company registered on Google, creating the logo and all. Taylor, thank you for being an amazing professional! Continue to STRIKE from the TOP! FAMUly forever.
