We had the good fortune of connecting with AJ Williams and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi AJ, we’d love to hear about how you approach risk and risk-taking
I believe taking risks as an entrepreneur is very important. Without taking risks, you will never know what is on the other side of fear. I’ve heard many stories from people who wish they had the courage to follow their dreams. Many people wish they had the courage to step outside their comfort zone to pursue something that some may think is unattainable. I believe if God gave me the vision, it is my responsibility to see the destination. I will not allow anyone to tell me what I can and cannot achieve based on their understanding.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?

When I was interviewed last summer, I mentioned that I refer to myself as The Braiding Jedi. Star Wars fans know, but for those who may not, a Jedi Master is someone who trains and elevates others to a higher ranking. My main purpose of my business is to elevate and uplift those around me. I try to network with fellow braiders across the country through a new mentorship program that I am apart of. I want everyone to feel and look their best after their experience with me. With returning clients, it leaves me feeling extremely rewarded because I’ve left a lasting impression on them to feel comfortable enough to continue to patronize my business.

January 29, 2022 was my One year anniversary since going full throttle with AJ Bella Beauty. At first, it was not an easy task to stay busy professionally. When my father-in-law was diagnosed with liver cancer in June 2021, it was an extremely difficult time and at one point I considered giving up because of the pressure to maintain my business while experiencing a family health emergency was stressful. He unfortunately lost his battle with cancer within 40 days. I chose to give the best service while experiencing a family tragedy because I needed the outlet for my sanity. I chose to continue servicing clients because I love what I do and it truly kept me occupied. My clients didn’t know what I was going through. I wanted to prove to myself that obstacles may slow me down but it would not stop me from achieving my dreams. I also wanted to show my peers that they too can follow their dreams in the face of adversity.

I want others to know that there may be times when the path is not clear. As long as you stay the course, you can reach your destination.

If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I am an artsy person so I love going to art exhibits. In November, I had the opportunity to take my children to the “Art From The Inside” exhibition at Oglethorpe University. It was an awesome exhibit of paintings and sketches created by individuals who are currently incarcerated. Many of the paintings were sold and the proceeds went to a good cause. I’m looking forward to visiting their new exhibit this year.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
First, I want to thank my husband and my parents who always keep me uplifted and truly believe in my gift. I want to thank my close-knit group of friends who always encourage me with positive affirmations and support my growth in this business. I would also like to thank my new mentor Jada Scott of @TheBraidersOnlyMembership. She is guiding my fellow braiders and I thru the natural hair world by helping us improve our skills and business aesthetic.
