We had the good fortune of connecting with Matthew Wright and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Matthew, do you have a favorite quote or affirmation?
I love the West African proverb Sankofa, or “It’s not taboo to go back and fetch that which you have forgotten.” Essentially, it’s okay to go back to/learn from the past in order to guide your future. I learned to live by this proverb from “Mama” Toni Thorpe in college and I love it so much because in life and especially my career, it’s so important (and helpful) to know how and where to find true history. When you can identify what was there before you, you can take notes and help yourself get to where you’ve never been.
Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
I go by Sitch, and I’m a singer, dancer, artist, and entertainer. I’m from Fayetteville, NC, and have been releasing music independently since 2015 (since 2019 under the “Sitch” artist name). The music I create falls mostly into the R&B/Pop-soul genre, but I love exploring my sound and broadening my repertoire. What sets me apart from other artists is my energy — if you’ve seen Sitch perform, you know he brings that spark — lively music, a good 8-count or two, audience interaction, a show. I also like creating music with more than just a catchy hook. My music’s messages can be vulnerable, sentimental, introspective, etc. and I love telling deeper stories.
It is not easy trying to make a foothold in any music community, but the path I’ve taken eventually led me to the Carolina Waves scene which actually leans more toward hip-hop. Imagine going to an open mic and after an hour of rappers and trappers, this tall light-skinned dude wearing a jersey starts singing and dancing. WHEW… I was definitely different — a breath of fresh air to some, not their cup of tea to others — but either way I’ve been authentic to myself and my brand, and that’s why I’m a force to be reckoned with.
Speaking of brand, I’m pretty much always rocking a jersey with the number 12 and touting “the Newsroom”. My artist name and number derive from my fraternity line name/number and Newsroom is what I’ve coined my supporters. I often wear jerseys because the team-mentality is very important to me. Nobody gets far without a village, and wearing my number on a jersey reminds me that I’m always a part of something bigger than myself.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
Okay, so one place I’d definitely take them is to EAV, because I love the food on Flat Shoals and Glenwood, plus there are dope murals and artwork. I think every visitor has to see spots like Ponce City Market and that bridge where you see a clear view of the downtown skyline over the highway. PERSONALLY, I would take friends over to the Doraville area for good Asian food and karaoke — we’d also have to hit up some studios to take dance classes from my homie Elliot YJ You, as well as choreographers like Sean Bankhead, Gary Beauford, Perlizbeth and EC De Leon, and more.
OH, and Hattie B’s and Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ. You know what… we’re just gonna be eating on this trip.
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I have to first shout out my parents, James and Teresa, my family, my best friend Nadjali, my bros, and the Babehs. Shouts out also to Mir.I.Am and the Carolina Waves community. A huge shout out goes to DJ RNB who connected me to this outlet and 4 Phones Ent which currently manages my artist career — 4 Phones has brought together artists, producers, DJs, and dancers under their management and I’ve learned so much about industry, drive, and strategy in the few quarters I’ve been with them. Everyone I’ve shouted out here has impacted my journey, so I’m grateful.
