We had the good fortune of connecting with Oveigh The Chef and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Oveigh, what was your thought process behind starting your own business?
I don’t think I had a thought process. I knew I wanted to eventually start my own brand and company but I couldn’t really see that happening because of fear and doubt .
I wanted to show chefs and home-cooks that it was possible to build a food community that was based on love and support. I initially didn’t even think of it as a business until I had some needed conversations with my mentors.
My business reflects me and everything I stand for. I wasn’t trying to be the largest company in the world but the most consistent one throughout these tough times.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
The act of cooking and serving food does seem like a noble thing. It gives people a form of escapism from the hustle and bustle of daily life. Immersing oneself in making a home-cooked meal can be a pleasurable experience too.
Being a chef may be the toughest job you’ll ever love.
Building a brand is not hard……It’s Difficult! To be clear, it is not hard to build a brand. Yet, building a brand, and maintaining it, in a noisy world is increasingly difficult. Trying to come up with ways for our foodies to stay engaged is the hardest part for my team.
There were days where I just couldn’t give anything to my team or my foodie fam. I was out of ideas and creativity. I was mentally drained and my level of engagement was very slim . I just couldn’t shake it . I was in that place for three months . You will have these days and that will determine if you’re ready for this journey.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Now this is a crazy question because I have so many spots that I absolutely love. Ok I’m going to name just a few because I would be here all day .
I think if you wanted to really experience the heart of Savannah then you would definitely have to check out some of our local seafood shops around town . There is no way you can come here and not experience our seafood. No way!!!
I absolutely love this old bank turned restaurant called “The Vault”. The food is amazing and the atmosphere is very chilled. They serve elevated Thai cuisine with a splash of Modern flare . It’s a good weekday spot but also a dope weekend vibe as well .
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Whew!!! This is a good question. I have so many people to thank for this. There is no way Food Mood would be this big , if I had to do this own my own .
I’m grateful for the startup crew Julie and Hakeem. They laid the foundation for what Food Mood has become . I mean they put everything they had so my dream could flourish.
I also have to give major Kudos to my two favorite people in the world . Jay and Avery. They know me !!! They have put there lives and dreams on hold so mine could become a reality. I honestly owe them everything I have because I have yet to find people that love like they do . They are two tough ladies but they are sweet as pie . They are honest with me and that’s all I ever ask for. No matter how successful I get, I would never let them go because they have proven themselves.
Shout out to Savannah as well. They stay rocking with me. They keep showing love!! I love my hometown.
