We had the good fortune of connecting with Johnny Washington and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Johnny, every day, we about how much execution matters, but we think ideas matter as well. How did you come up with the idea for your business?
bundt•ish, a pound cakery was born early April 2020 during the beginning stages of the pandemic. We were lusting for a pound cake and couldn’t find one to be delivered on demand. My husband (and co-founder) said, “Why can’t we start a pound cake company that delivers pound cakes on demand?”. We began talking about it and by the end of April bundt•ish was officially incorporated. Johnny and I have spent the last 14 months building, strategizing and executing our vision for bundt•ish…A place where people want to work, grow, thrive and what we call #deliveringmomentsbythepound. This vision will launch fall 2021.
What should our readers know about your business?
What Sets Us Apart:
What is our competitive differential from our competitors is the real question here:
Firstly, differentiating yourself from your competitors requires intention and purpose. If you don’t set out to be different from the rest of the crowd, chances are you won’t be. We have from day one. By surveying the market and asking ourselves how we could approach the cake business differently, we then determined the right approach for our company. Consequently, we focused on several key customer touchpoints: cake flavors and varieties, business name, colors, packaging, gifting and unboxing experience, logo design, etc. Because the customer ultimately decides whether or not to support your brand, these touchpoints are essential.
Our second distinct advantage is our operational difference: we are a virtual bakery, we follow a gradual, methodical scalability process, we realize the importance of keeping the right balance between customer development and product development, and we have built the right infrastructure. Finally, we are a purpose-driven company. We have a mission, a calling to fulfill. Our company makes pound cake, but we are much more than that. The concept behind our company is not just to provide delicious pound cakes, but to provide a complete pound cake experience.
As a company, we are committed to creating unique and memorable moments for our clients. It is our goal to create products that allow people to share moments between family, friends, colleagues, and even strangers. The spirit of the purpose, the calling, is to restore lost moments whenever possible and to create new ones, as well.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
We are pretty low-key…But if we wanted to show our out of town friends a good time, I would have my favorite cupcakes from Camicakes waiting for them upon check-in. ATL is the city of rooftop bars and restaurants…Pregame begins at The Roof at Ponce City Market and dinner at Le Colonial in Buckhead. Saturday breakfast would definitely find us at The Real Milk & Honey in College Park followed by an afternoon at the Botanical Gardens and a nap before the evening shenanigans. Saturday pregame begins early at Twisted Soul Cookhouse with Chef Deborah VanTrece in West Midtown. Followed by and ending at Rock Steady on Marietta Street. Sunday is not SUNDAY WITHOUT brunch in Atlanta…First stop is brunch at Le Petit Marche and an afternoon at the National Center for Civil and Human Rights. The weekend would end with Sunday steaks and bourbon at New York Prime in Buckhead and dessert at Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
Through life and through death, this honor most certainly goes to my father, Stanley W. Brice, and to Johnny’s mother, Ethel “Sister” Gardner, and also to my mother, Shirley Reich, who even to this day is our most ardent cheerleader and supporter! She always has a word of encouragement, a timely prayer, or just an honest opinion when asked. Collectively, they each have prepared us for life and for this journey. Their teaching and advise throughout our lives have taught us that the shortest distance between two points of life is not always a straight line. They have demonstrated in their lives and we have witnessed first hand that the best road to travel is often the road less traveled. That is the essence of life. That is the essence of business. This is why we feel called and prepared to do the work and fulfill our purpose that is bundtish.
