We had the good fortune of connecting with Hasan Dirton Jr and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Hasan, how do you think about risk?
Risk are necessary for growth. I believe that without them there is no progress that happens. Even when you risk take and fall, there is a lesson that is birthed in that process. My journey has evolved because of the risk that I take. I’ve never been afraid to jump but the process has shown ways to take calculated risk. It’s important to approach every situation with some type of thought or strategy with it. I’ve learned that proper planning prevents poor performance, and with research you can go out on limbs and be able to set yourself up for success or put yourself in a better position if you don’t get the outcome you hoped for. From spending rent on production, to selling my possession to get to an internship in Los Angelos, learning to take more calculated risk will save you from hard falls while building your dream.

Alright, so let’s move onto what keeps you busy professionally?
House of Huebris is a concept shop and brand I created in 2013 as a sophomore at the University of South Carolina Upstate. The word Hubris means excessive pride and self confidence; we added the E for expression of colors that are used within our product design. The brand collaborates with artists and designers to create clothing, home goods, and special items. House of Huebris represents a perspective that uses the lessons learned from pride as a tool to rebuild one’s confidence and serve others. I’m most proud of the journey. No one gave us blueprints to this industry, and coming from the Carolinas creating a lifestyle brand centered around urban street culture is not highly accepted. I didn’t come from money or had investors lining up. Everything was built on strategy, patience, sacrifice, and a lot of hustle. I remember selling all of my possession to fund a new design and get me to LA for an internship so I could learn more about the industry. After coming home, I hit a rock bottom. I had to restructure the business, this is when I became more interested in the production process. My team and I managed to rent a studio space and began producing for other companies to fund our ideas. From there it led me to Charlotte, NC where the brand is growing and more and more people are taking notice. Like Nipsey said, I went through every emotion, but the thing that separates me is that I didn’t quit. That’s the biggest lesson, don’t quit! Take your lumps, learn from him, and release the pain into the product. Your story will connect with the right people.

Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
Well if you’re pulling up on me in Charlotte, we would get a workout in at Crowders Mountain Hike & Hiit Training. After we can hit Leah & Louise for some brunch vibes. They got some Oxtails and grits that’ll make you sing! We then can head to Noda or Plaze Midwood for some drinks and impulse shopping, maybe hit the Sleepy Poet for some vintage thrifts. For the night show we can grab some food at Nikkos, this lit Japanese spot. Then we get smacked at tattoos & Booz or Lost & Found.

Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
There’s 3 people who have given me the support and mentorship that got me to where I am now. First is Aaron Johnson, A friend and business partner who was the first to school me on graphic design and how to earn capital by creating a service based company outside the fashion label. He gave me the fuel to go out and sharpen my skills in order to become elite within design and an entrepreneur. 2nd there is Dammit Wesley. A highly revered Artist, muralist, social commentator based out of Charlotte, NC. I’m grateful for the encouragement, opportunities, and guidance he is giving me on how to navigate the industry and have my way with it. Lastly, Macfly Fresh Printing, a Charlotte, Nc based branding studio. The owners Eric Ndelo and Taj Polite where they were gracious enough to partner with me and my embroidery business. They have showed me the ropes on creating a successful creative and production company. I’m forever grateful for what I have learned and the ability to have a full space to create out of.
