We had the good fortune of connecting with Mike Maven and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Mike, how do you think about risk?
There is an old saying, “the greater the risk, the greater the reward.” That phrase epitomizes the risks I’ve taken in life and in my career.
For me, and many people like me who grow-up in a state like Alabama, having a dream of a successful and renowned career in the music industry seemed far-fetched due to the lack of resources and opportunities in those states. Because of that I knew, early in life, that I would have to eventually leave Alabama and venture to other parts of the country – areas where music is more prevalent to having a fighting chance of success in the industry. When I made the move, it came at the expense of leaving my family and close friends behind. This was a huge risk, but because I had faith in my abilities and a solid home foundation, I was able to successfully navigate through the challenges that came with this risk.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
I believe what sets me apart from the pack is that my sound is genuinely my own. While I listen to what’s trendy in music to stay aware,I love creating authentic, raw beats with true tones of instruments. I learned to play the piano, by ear, at age 13. I could listen to the radio and immediately play the keys on the song that I’d just heard. My parents noticed this and invested in a organ and piano and I haven’t stopped playing since. In most of my production, you’ll hear a few chords from my keyboard that really stand out. That has become the signature “Mike Maven” sound.
Like most musicians, my career has had its ups and downs. Nipsey Hustle said, “Before you run your race, you have to find your pace and cross the finish line no matter how much time it takes.” I never quit, even when I was at my lowest points. I learned from the mistakes I made and overcame the challenges and obstacles that the music industry throws at all newcomers. Having a solid foundation is always essential in life, no matter what you do; and so, my strong faith in God and genuine encouragement from my family has also played a major role in my success.
Other than that, I’m really just a regular dude. I’m big on family and an avid video gamer. I try to remain true to myself and my values. When people meet me, they most often remember that I am real and authentic. I’m just a regular guy from Alabama that had a dream and a passion for music.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
I consider myself a real “ATLien” because I’m not from here. So I tend to recommend the classic Atlanta spots like Little Five Points and Ponce City Market – you can’t go wrong there! I’m also extremely competitive, so I would take them to Andretti’s or Pin and Proper just to show off my skills.
When it’s all said and done, anyone who really knows me knows that I’m a really bad tour guide because my favorite place is the studio.
The Shoutout series is all about recognizing that our success and where we are in life is at least somewhat thanks to the efforts, support, mentorship, love and encouragement of others. So is there someone that you want to dedicate your shoutout to?
I would be remised if I only named one person because there are several people that have contributed directly and indirectly to my success. I want to give a shout-out to my family and friends who have loved and supported me throughout my career. I wouldn’t be where I am today without their support and love.
I also want to give a special shout-out to my brother Terry “Tetris” Francis, an Army veteran and art curator here in Atlanta; and my nephew Braxton “Who is Brax” Francis, a recording artist and recent college graduate. You should interview them next because they’re rising stars in Atlanta; and now that we all live in the same city, we’re about to apply some pressure to the game – stay tuned!
