We had the good fortune of connecting with Dane Robinson and we’ve shared our conversation below.

Hi Dane, what’s one piece of conventional advice that you disagree with?
“You will find success with hard work”

Meh…

Don’t get me wrong I am a 100% believer there is NO substitute for hard work. And more commonly hard working individuals beat out those that possess more talent 9.5 times out of 10, but hard work doesn’t create success.

If anything it helps you fail quick and sooner so you know what works and what doesn’t work.

I’ve chuckled at past self plenty of times as I’ve thought “Man that was a flop!”. Doesn’t mean I didn’t put my all into whatever that project, person, or career move was. But that hard work hardly created success.

It’s the times we fall down, The times where we don’t get to the ideal outcome. The losses we take from the hard work we put in is what creates the success later on because without those moments you don’t know what you don’t know, you have much better clarity on yourself, and identify strategically where to pour yourself into better.

Failures from hard work = success.

Let’s talk shop? Tell us more about your career, what can you share with our community?
To sum up what I do in my career these days is likened to a well balanced stock portfolio. -Personal Fitness Coach (Buckhead/Sandy Spring, GA)
-Group Fitness Coach (BLAST & Row House)
-TV Fitness Coach (Daily Burn & Total Gym TV)
-Owner of the Fit Pro Gameplan, a career mentorship for fitness professionals
-Motivational & Energy Personality (Dose of Dane)
-Women’s Tackle Football Head Coach (Atlanta Empire, X-League)

But most of this stems from the foundation of being a collegiate and professional arena football player harness the skills of teamwork, patience, immediate success, immediate failure, and the constant pursuit of greatness.

When it came to entering the fitness industry and growing from there I literally started from mopping floors at a Bally Total Fitness to running a whole regional training department for OneLife Fitness Atlanta and everything in between. From there I realized that there is value in EXPERIENCE and accruing that over time in learning and doing things you don’t know how to do yet. However also learning that time is precious and building something for YOURSELF not for someone else is invaluable because no matter what industry you are in, when you are working and building for someone else that person will never pay you enough to be their neighbor. (think about that)

Creating opportunities and something I could call my own from fitness coaching to building a business to help other fitness professionals created not only income but CHOICE. Choice in who I get to work with and where without relying on that in determining my success or failure.

Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
Someone coming has to enjoy the accessible big city that is Atlanta. And that is spending time in Midtown either catching a comedy show at The Vortex or heading to grab a drink at Two Urban Licks on the Beltline.

I’m a big fan of casual nights out so I would have to make a solid reservation at the Painted Pin one of Buckhead’s best kept secrets or one of their newest secrets PuttShack in West Midtown. Something so satisfying about having fun playing games as adults!

To either catch a fun game at the ballpark or just enjoy the vibrancy of the area The Battery has quickly become a new staple of where you need to hangout.

And if someone is coming to ATL amongst the fun this city is rooted in history and I love grounding into that by visiting the Civil Rights Museum at Centennial Park. This is truly an experience that grounds us in our history as black people or serve as an authentic education and immersive experience for those not of color.
