We had the good fortune of connecting with Kendra Currie and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Kendra, what role has risk played in your life or career?
“No Risk, No Reward”, I’ve been living by this saying since the very beginning. I’m also a very curious person so either way I’ll have no choice but to take a risk to see what will happen.
Starting with my decision to move from Memphis, TN, to Nashville, TN at age 17. I found myself coming to a new city for college, taking up Psychology, and hairstyling part time not even realizing that was the start of my career.
When I started my salon suites, Curriosity’s Suite Life: Beauty Suites, shortly after college, I had second thoughts to be honest. Thoughts like “will this work”, “Im so young, I don’t know much”, “what if I fail”, at the time I was 23 years old, and I knew I wanted to create something different in this beauty industry when it came to entrepreneurs and salon suites. I prayed about it, and God gave me the “Go”. Reminding myself of “risk” and “why” alone kept me focused on the bigger picture. I genuinely want to help other women who was once where I was.
Here I am, starting my second year as a Salon Suite owner. I’m so thankful for God’s grace. Taking risks has made me resilient, and more confident. I face the fear of uncertainty with my head held high. .
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
Starting my business at such a young age was not east at all, however opening Curriosity’s Suite Life: Beauty Suites was the best decision I’ve ever made.
Before opening there were many risk I took and I had to mentally prepare myself for the load I’ve taken on, I’ve never been the boss of anyone but myself, therefore it was necessary to become the woman I needed to be, to be able to do that. I grew closer to God and I started a journey to find who I was.
I wrote my vision, and made it plain. Never gave up. Never took the word “no” to heart. In the midst of finding who I was, I managed to change my thought process. Their “no’s” were my “NOt yet. Anything I want I can have and will have. Everything works out in my favor in reality. Your mindset is probably the most important factor in running any business.
In business, you have your wins and losses, and losses are okay! Actually necessary. Without any loss their is no lesson, and if you keep taking the same loss, you haven’t learned your lesson. One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is patience. Patience is key. Ive taken many losses because I wasn’t patient.
The meaning behind Curriosity is the unknowing. People who are curious have interest, and when you have something that their curious about you’re giving an opportunity to embrace and experience. Being curious also works your mind muscles, which become stronger with continuous curriosity. Life is better when you’re curious, if you didn’t know! The spelling behind Curriosity is my last name which happens to be Currie.
I have big dreams and one happens to be for Curriosity, the brand, to be one of the biggest brand in the beauty industry.
If you had a friend visiting you, what are some of the local spots you’d want to take them around to?
One of my favorite spots to visit is Connor’s Steak House. Their lamb chops are heaven! Next we’d definitely go to Hampton Social, a vibe and the food is great! For drinks, I’d have to say Eddie V’s Prime and Seafood.
My favorite brunch spot is STK! Their bottomless mimosas, paired with chicken and waffles is top tier!
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I would like to give a shout-out to my family! You all have witnessed everything from the very beginning, especially my cousins. Thank you ladies the most for allowing me to practice in your hair. Thank you all for helping me realize my gift at such an early age. Mom, the person who has kept me sane throughout every wild decision I make, thank you. Thank you for having my back. I appreciate and love you guys forever
To my close friends, I’m so thankful for each of you. Thank you for being a listening ear even when you don’t even understand what I’m talking about, thank you for being honest with me, correcting me when I’m wrong, loving me unconditionally and allowing me to be who I am.
To my clients, without you there’s no Curriosity! Thank you for your continuous support. I’ve been doing this for 10 years now and in no way did I realize I would be doing this for the rest of my life. Thank you for trusting me with your crown.
