We had the good fortune of connecting with Dayana Salinas and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dayana, have there been any changes in how you think about work-life balance?
We’re living in such a hustle 24/7 generation, where if you don’t have at least 3 side gigs you’re not doing enough. It’s one thing to have side gigs for nessescity but it’s another thing to over work yourself for the sake of just working. I get it, I used to push myself to make money, extra money and then even more money just because I could. Overworking yourself for someone else will take It’s toll on you. I’ve been slowly learning to focus on one thing I’m really good at and passionate about and find a work life balance. It’s an everyday learning experience but I have finally gotten to the point where I don’t feel guilty for turning down a gig, it’s ok to not hustle your yourself away. I have found that allowing myself to work when I need to and then turn around and treat myself to a chill day, if that’s hiking, chilling at home, cooking etc. Whatever you consider self care is very important for your mental health. You’ll come back more focused and able to produce better work too. Going from a work, work, work, no days off mentality to a `chill bitch, its ok to just chill sometimes’ mentality has made a big difference in the work I produce. My goal is to eventually have my own space where people can shop sustainable, eat local grown food and enjoy drinks and music. The goal is to not work myself to death building someone else’s dream.
Can you open up a bit about your work and career? We’re big fans and we’d love for our community to learn more about your work.
Over the years I’ve educated myself on the importance of sustainability and how important it is for our planet that we all do our part somehow. I have always loved thrifting/shopping second hand and found myself finding pieces that were often times just not my size. I always felt they were special and deserved to be worn, so I started reselling. I put my creative touch on some of the items like fabric painting designs or altering some pieces. I like to incorporate my love for photography & fashion by setting up shoots of the clothing with people wearing them out and bringing the pieces to life. My hope is to open the minds of customers who only ever shop fast fashion and show them that there’s beauty in unique pieces & you can thrift high end design fashion for less, all while supporting small business & helping the planet.
Let’s say your best friend was visiting the area and you wanted to show them the best time ever. Where would you take them? Give us a little itinerary – say it was a week long trip, where would you eat, drink, visit, hang out, etc.
One thing you need to know about me, I’m a big foodie & outdoor girl so here’s what we’re gonna do:
breakfast crepes from at Juliannas near Inman Park
A hike somewhere in North GA
Then I’d force them to take Marta to tour the city, everyone hates it but I secretly love it
Check out the High museum or any new exhibits in the city
Grab a binh Minh sandwich from `Lee’s bakery` off Burford hwy or at little Rey off piedmont ave
Hit up live music by the river at the Chattahoochee nature center or see if La cholo teca has any dance events happening
Grab drinks and dinner at Patria Cocina
Then chase the sunset around the city while snapping some photos
Who else deserves some credit and recognition?
I want to thank all the small resellers putting soo much of their creative visions into the public to help open the possibility of future clothing consumption. Especially to ‘Nazarisracks’ on IG. She’s truly passionate about the love for thrift and it shows. I also want to thank all the beautiful people in my life who continue to let me dress them up and run around the city with me for photoshoots. Special thanks to Carla of ‘atlcheapdate` for doing the outfits/fun things to do around Atlanta shoots with me. Last but not least, I wanna thank me. I wanna thank for doing all this hard work.
