We had the good fortune of connecting with Dr. LaWanda Hill and we’ve shared our conversation below.
Hi Dr. LaWanda, is there something that you feel is most responsible for your success?
I firmly believe that the most important factor behind success is defining it for yourself and by yourself. That’s such a critical starting point. Otherwise, you aren’t grounded in a truth that is authentic to you, rather someone else’s vision of success for their life. And that’s a sure way to failure. So, for me, success starts with me sitting with myself to identify what it looks and feels like for me, and then radically pursuing it!
We need more so now than ever a brand that speaks to the complexities of our experiences as black women, normalizes them, and provides support on how to continue to evolve into the version of ourselves that we desire and are defined by ourselves. That’s what my brand embodies and that’s what makes for its continued success.
Alright, so for those in our community who might not be familiar with your business, can you tell us more?
My business is dedicated to empowering Black women to be higher version of themselves; sexually, relationally, emotionally, spiritually, and physically. I am a champion of women and their right to live, love, and heal on their own terms. Therefore, the work that I do intersects at the corners of theoretical training and radical thinking that encourages a “pursuit of pleasure and well-being.”
My brand is set apart in that the work that I do unapologetically and unequivocally centers Black women; their voices, narratives, and most importantly their well-being and birthright to pleasure.
It has not been easy at all. The challenges have been working to communicate the complexities and dynamic aspects of the brand, and managing several responsibilities and competing priorities while running a business. Overcoming these challenges have come through much prayer, wise counsel and really checking in with myself and moving with intentionality.
What I want folks to know about my brand is that I understand our plight as Black women; I understand our magic, our complexities, our challenges. and I understand it in a very nuanced and professionally trained way. I am very aware of the visible and invisible forces that stifle our wellbeing, growth and right to pleasure. So my brand takes on that complexity, and packages it in a way in which women can receive it in a way that feels real, relatable and relevant.
I am excited about a new product I will be releasing in November that is all about discovering our pathways to pleasure!!! Subscribe to my website @www.drlawandahillcom to stay in the know and get exclusive offers and discounts for this product. I assure you that you haven’t seen anything like it.
Any places to eat or things to do that you can share with our readers? If they have a friend visiting town, what are some spots they could take them to?
OMG, I would take them to Los Angeles. The challenge is I would need someone to show me where to go and hang out lol. I am not from there but I love the energy!
Shoutout is all about shouting out others who you feel deserve additional recognition and exposure. Who would you like to shoutout?
I have an incredible team of people I trust, value greatly, and whose work I respect greatly. When you set off to start a business there is so much that goes into establishing your brand. My branding consultant, Kelly King of the Livewire Agency, has been so incredibly instrumental in taking my vision for my brand and making it come to life. I am eternally grateful to her for the work she consistently does. Additionally, I have an amazing business and legal team that helps me run the business of my brand, and they too have been instrumental in my success. And of course, I have several mentors, friends, and family members who have affirmed me, inspired me, rooted for me, and challenged me to step into a greater version of myself.
